When rebuilding our deck several years ago, we considered composite but discovered that we could get Ipe (Brazilian hardwood) for about the same cost. No maintenance needed unless you want to keep the dark color and that only requires a coat of oil in the spring. After 6 winters the deck still looks great and best of all, it is real wood and has a look which no composite that I have seen can match.

Well, both deck material having their own advantages. But the majority of decks built today are made of wood. The main reason people choose wood is for the initial cost savings. And on the other side the reason people choose composite or man-made deck materials is for the low maintenance required.At the end the decision is all your's with which deck material you go for.

EP Visualz made a great suggestion with Ipe, a Brazilian hardwood that requires much less maintenance than a traditional wood deck. Ipe is a naturally resilient building material and stays beautiful with minimal maintenance.

It also provides many benefits over composite decking beyond the more desirable appearance. Composite deck materials tend to get unbearably hot in the sun and it's uncomfortable to walk on because they absorb and hold the heat. This effect can be amplified if you are in an area with a lot of sun.

If the composite boards get deep scratches or stains, you are unable to sand and refinish the boards - you must replace them. This can cause additional problems when the new boards do not match the original ones that you had installed due to discontinuation or discoloration.

If you are concerned about the maintenance required with a wood deck, you should consider exotic hardwoods like Ipe, Tigerwood, or Cumaru. These materials have much lower maintenance than most wood decks while still providing all of the benefits of having a wood deck.

Other great options are Redwood and Mahogany decks.

If the deck will be in direct sun, consider that the composite decks can get very hot.

We used mahogany in the front and pressure treated in the back. Mahogany wins. The PT tends to bow a little. We oil each in the spring. That's all.

Look at cumuru. Similar to ipe. Less expensive. Love ours

Composites and get very hot and some will scratch if you have big dogs. Ipe is the way to go if you don't mind a little maintenance.

I would definitely go for African Mahogany wood decking if you choose to use wood for your decking at all.

IPE doesn't splinter like the old wood decks you are used to. It is 8x harder than Redwood, 2.5x stronger than Redwood and has a Class A fire rating. Meaning it's as good as brick in terms of fire spread. It's termite and mold resistant and certified for use in ADA applications. As far as stubbing your toes you can use hidden fasteners so there are no screws from above or IPE plugs if screwing from the top. IPE is long lasting too: The boardwalk at Coney Island used IPE and it lasted 70 years before being replaced and the wood is still going in the form of benches, planter boxes and other things. I'd never use composite over IPE ever unless you like that plastic look...
