Living Room

Hello,

We recently purchased our first home :) And we are trying to layout the living room. It is a very odd shape. Long and narrow. Most design pictures I have looked at for long and narrow living rooms have walls on both sides However, ours is an open concept. I've attached some pictures of how we have it laid out now. I just think it may cut off the kitchen too much. Would love any thoughts of the current layout and/or suggestions for a different layout. Also any design ideas are welcome(should I add curtains, artwork, different color scheme, etc.) Would like to eventually replace the tv stand as well as the current one doesn't fit.
Thanks!

I would rotate the sofa so it is facing directly with the T.V.

Agree with Dytecture. If it fits. You can also try placing the sofa where the chair is and let the chair face the TV. That would give you space for an end table between chair and sofa. Good spot to put a table lamp on. I think I would try to find a long low media cabinet, either white or in the colour of your dining table.

I see 2 main options here:

    Option 1)

Place sofa facing tv/chair in the corner by the window

    Option 2)

Place tv in corner (left side of windows)/place sofa at same angle as tv/same angle as kitchen counter. So, tv, sofa and counter will all be parallel. Traffic walks between counter and back of sofa.

Please try with existing furniture and repost photos. Thanks.

Do you get a reflection from the light of the windows on the TV? If so, try moving it between the windows. At least until you buy draperies. Yes, I would hang drapes. It looks like you already have the rods up. It would be good to add another chair or two for good conversation when you have company.

I think the way it is arranged now seems to suit your room. You can put your sofa with the back toward the stair rails. Not too close, enough room to walk around it. It would provide a better viewing area for the TV if you do not move the TV. I like what you hung between the windows, but it needs to be lower by maybe 12"- 18". One of you hold it up until the other one likes it. You do need some more things to hang. Check for pictures or objects at a thrift store. It does not need to be a picture. You may have an object in your house that means something to you both. Try a grouping. Buy a plant or two and place them with some books on your coffee table.

You really have a great start to a lovely warm and inviting home. Pick up antiques at yard sales if they appeal to you. Almost my whole house has been done in thrift store finds or items that were given to me. Maybe some big floor cushions until you can buy more furniture.

I also liked CDRs suggestions about placing furniture on an angle. Angles always add interest to a setting and you seem to have the room for it. Try for a lower TV stand when you replace the one you have now. Even though it is inevitably the focal point in the room you will want to minimize it as a focal point.

It seems the railing is a little far from tv. I agree with the above. Show us each change please.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! We arranged the furniture on an angle as some have suggested. Please see attached pictures and let me know your thoughts :) We are going to work on getting some more accessories(desk behind the couch, plants, artwork). Are there any suggestions for curtains?

I like a pattern on the curtains to give interest. Looks really good! Have you thought of hanging the TV on the wall and getting a rustic wood "buffet" table for underneath?

Hi. You need to place the sofa at a 45 degree angle. Thus, it will be parallel to the kitchen counter.

I would not work on the drapes until you have the furniture arrangement resolved.

Maybe couch is too close to wall?

The sofa is too close to the wall and not angled correctly. However, now that I see the tv in the corner, the tv seems a little large for the corner.

I think the first option would work better. I would try moving the tv back to where it was. Then float the sofa, facing the tv. The sofa should be about where it is currently (even with the second window).

    Thanks.

Thank you again for all your comments! I've moved the tv back to where it is and I've floated the sofa to face the tv. I don't have it exactly in line with the windows because I find it cuts too much of the room and leaves a lot of empty space in behind the sofa. I think this is the best arrangement so far, though I still don't like seeing the back of the sofa when coming up the stairs. Hoping that a table in behind the sofa will help. Let me know your thoughts :)

Ppalmer50: You did not like the angled look? Drapes. Do they need to be a certain distance above the heat runs? Your rods are okay where they are, just hang the drapes as close to the heat runs as you can. It looks as though you already have blinds. I would like to see you add a new color to the room. A great print or bold stripe with yellow in it within the drapes if you choose drapes. Then add pops of yellow, orange and/or turquoise on the coffee table & on the sofa with smaller pillows.

Don't avoid some prints or stripes in the room. You have a great start and some good suggestions to work with. If you don't like the look of the back of the sofa from the stairs, drape the sofa throw or an American Indian looking blanket over the railing. Adding color and print scares some people, however just stay with similar colors within the prints or stripes and it will work.

You could move couch under the two windows & chair at stairs.

Hi. I think the last arrangement is getting close to where you want to be. The tv was too large for the corner.

One thing I find a lot of people don't understand is this: no matter how large a room is, a conversation area and tv viewing area can only be so large. 8 feet is the farthest one given seat should be from another. For tv's i no longer use "rules", because each tv and view is different. However, it does appear your tv could be a little closer for sure for ideal viewing.

So, here is what I recommend to make your area feel and work better. Some of these steps you can take right now.

    1) Move the sofa up so that it is even with the window. (coffee table should be centered between windows)
    2) Behind the sofa, place a sofa table (light in color)
    3) On the sofa table, place 2 lamps
    4) Remove the throw from the back of the sofa
    5) Center the tv on the sofa
    6) Place chair to the right of tv and if you have another one, place it to the left of the tv
    7) Buy a new console for tv
    8) Buy an area rug that is larger and fills the new area. (For now, turning existing rug the other direction would help
    9) Small mirror is a nice piece, but hung too high and would need to be moved for window treatments.
    10) Roman Shades would be a good window treatment (with your heat vents on the floor)

I really like the idea of Roman shades for the windows. I agree the object hanging between the windows is high. Use a color for the roman shades. Maybe teal.

We moved the sofa so it is even with the window and moved the coffee table between the windows. It looks great. We are thinking about this for behind the couch.

    This for the rug: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/brown-sisal-area-rug-8-feet-x-10-feet/960910

And thinking one of these for the console table:

    Any thoughts on these?

The roman shades are a great idea, but I may have to go with curtains for now since I just purchased the blinds a few months ago. Will look into this in the future though :)

Sofa table is 39 wide. How wide is your sofa? Sofa table should be around 3/4 width of sofa or it tends to look short.

Rug looks really plain. Is that what you want?

I like the console table. Is it wider than the tv?

    Could we see new photo?

I think the rug you are contemplating is too plain.
I agree with CDR Design on the sofa table. I love either console table. I'd go with the least expensive & there are only 2 left of the last one. I'd like to see a more colorful area rug if you feel you need to get another one. I really loved your furniture arrangement in your photo posted on Oct 16th at 5:59. Angles are so interesting visually.
Correction: there are only 2 left of the 1st media stand, and 2nd one is on back order. But as long as what you buy is similar I'm sure you can buy one elsewhere.

Sorry, I did not see your second media stand with the baskets. My observation is that the photos you have in your idea book are more sophisticated than the furniture you chose with the baskets. Although it is hard to put in words, furniture with pull-out baskets tends to look shabby chic/not as permanent/more toy-roomish (I just made phrase up)/college-dorm as furniture with door and drawers.

I hope that makes sense. Maybe you really love baskets and the look they give. If so, I say buy them. I just am not seeing that look in your idea book photos.

    Looks much better angled.

What seems to be lacking are larger
Wall pieces . Id also ditch the stand and hang the tv instead
  • 11 years ago
I happened to like it angled. Is glare an issue on the tv when it's straight against the wall? What does the other side of the room look like?
