Wonderful! My husband and I were just discussing doing this to our coat closet. We live in a 1914 farmhouse with several additions. No mud room, and with 300 inches of snow we are desperate. We have been calling our idea a "mini mud room". Thanks for the colorful inspiration!

I understand about having multiple children and the need for storage! I applaud your creation of organizing the space. My only question is why not put doors back on the closet to cover up when the kids are haphazard about putting their items away, or are you willing to go behind them and make sure they do put their things away properly, everyday?

The closet doors were broken when we moved in, so we just took them off and didn't replace them. I've made a rule of one coat and one bag per kid and adult (my husband and I have our own hooks on the sides). The kids are actually pretty good about keeping the space uncluttered. I thought about hanging a curtain on either side (of some fabulous material - oh how I love the fabric store) which could easily be closed, but honestly we haven't needed it.

We have way too many coats/jackets for that solution...

Yes, admittedly this is no longer a coat closet. We put a free standing coat rack downstairs which also has bins on the bottom for storing extra shoes, hats, scarves, umbrellas, etc.

I think you did an awesome job! Is that yellow that the trimming was painted, love the color and the picture above of the birds. Very playful looking and by having no doors will just help you keep it less and simple...

Love! Are the hooks from Anthropologie? If so, I bought them but haven't put them up yet - are they okay with heavy backpacks?

Yes! The hooks are from Anthropologie :) they are cast iron and absolutely able to hold very heavy bags. We added a piece of hardwood trim to screw the hooks into, since I wasn't convinced that the other wood was solid enough. I used long black screws, and those puppies are solid.
