This is a great question and gives me the opportunity to comment on an area that I feel many people don't understand. Most cabinet shops employ box salesmen, a rare few will actually have trained kitchen designers. A box salesperson fills a room with boxes (cabinets) thats their role, sell the cabinets. A trained kitchen designer looks at the whole space, not just the cabinets, they will first complete a space study to analyze if there are any tweaks that can be done with the layout. Despite the fact you are not making any major changes there actually may be potential improvements by shifting the big players down or around, (refer, range, etc) then symmetry, style, color, texture and pattern come into play to make an interesting and functional kitchen. Although a designer will still be specifying cabinets of course, the goal isn't to sell you boxes, but to design your kitchen and plan out all of the details, a difference in perspective that is evident in the finished product. When a client comes to me after a remodel they completed with a big box store or cabinet shop, often as a DIY, and they wonder what's missing, why doesnt their kitchen look like their inspiration photo; it's the details and personality. These kitchens had the same potential as kitchens you see in magazines, but without proper guidance, it is unlikely you will get the same result. Many clients worry this means they will spend more with a designer because they think we are more expensive, this is a misconception, I often save clients thousands, not only in directing them to the right materials for their project and budget, but also in proper planning for the details that need to be thought out ahead of time so they can be communicated to their contractor, saving them from costly change orders in the field. But, I do explain that it is likely I will expose clients to materials and options they had not considered or even known about, that could lead a client to add items which might add to their costs. But these are usually the exact desicions that help bring personality and style to their new kitchen.
