The kind of fan I mean is a bathroom exhaust fan - not a bladed fan like those on your site.

Panasonic and Nutone both make a recessed can light/ fan combination. You could replace the can trim with a haze or wheat trim to dress it up. This is a great way to camouflage the fan.

The recessed light/fan combo is probably what I'll wind up with, as the fan is really inconspicuous. What I'd love is something similar, but if instead of the bulb socket in the light/fan combo there were a standard ceiling fixture that I could attach a chandelier to.

What do you have above the powder room - attic space or is there a second level to the house? If attic space, you can use a FanTech in-line fan and have only a small, inconspicuous grill off in a corner of the powder room. The fan itself is mounted to the rafter system in the attic and is absolutely silent. You can then put whatever light you wish in the room. Not the cheapest solution - depends on how much you want it.

well, usually the body of the fan is under a wide light base, as for a globe light, since the fan needs to be able to draw from the sides if it's not flush with the ceiling, so it would be hard to adapt it for a chandelier. I think just put the fan off to one side and painted to match the ceiling, and then put your fun fixture in the center or near the sink.

Deborah, that FanTech might be the best solution for me, as it is attic above, and there's another bathroom that shares a wall with this bathroom. I see they've got units that can work with multiple grills and that could eliminate another ugly fan in the other bath as well.

Yes you can put up to about 3 ducts on a unit. The tricky part is trying to get three way switches to work when they are in separate areas. We have done it once when we put one of the ducts in a toilet room, one over the shower and another elsewhere in the same bath - but the electrician had to work really hard to get it to work right.

I'm not aware of any bath fans with decorative lighting included. The integrated lights on bath fans are pretty utilitarian. I think your electrician will have to wire/switch for two separate fixtures: one for the fan and one for the decorative light.
