Oooh, Christie, I didn't notice the pic you attached before I commented last...your kitchen is gorgeous! It is very close to what we are doing. May I ask the details? We are doing a shaker-ish cabinet in white along the perimeter and a cocoa (espresso) island. We struggled with doing a finish on the cabinets. What color are your cabinets? Is that a gray island? So pretty. I have been researching marble alternatives for the counters and am hoping to be able to afford quartzite. Is that what you picked? What is the name of your counters?

Thank you! Was a ton of work but, we are really happy with the resutls. Cabinets are Omega Dynasty. Style: Delray Color: Pearl with Pewter Glaze (Island is Battleship Grey). Counters are Super White Quartzite. I really hesitated on installing the quartzite since I read a ton of blogs and conversations about etching and imperfections but, now I almost feel like the imperfections give it character. There are a few spots in the stone where there is a chip or a small scratch, I've even noticed an etched spot (all from day one) and none of it bothers me. Good luck with your project!

Thank you for all the info!!!! I seriously considered doing a pewter glaze on our cabinets and chickened out at the last minute. The only samples they had were on a more ornate cabinet, and I couldn't tell if it was the cabinet style or the glaze that I didn't like. So I opted not to take the chance, but now looking at your cabinets I am second guessing myself. :( I've been reading up on the Super White quartzite, too...have spent hours reading the advice section on Houzz and any blog that discussed it. I'm sad to hear that yours has etched but I am encouraged to know that it isn't bothersome. In our current house we have a granite that is very forgiving (I have to get at eye level to see crumbs!) so I was worried that I'd notice every imperfection of the Super White (or other quartzites I've researched). We are building a new house and all these decisions are already wearing me down! I think our kitchen guy was growing weary of seeing us. ;) May I ask where you got the quartzite? I am wondering if we are in the same area. I am on the East Coast. Was your kitchen part of a new build, too?

We weren't sure about the glaze so we had our cabinet guy order a sample door. We were anxious to start our project so the day before the sample came, we placed the order for just pearl. Upon receipt of the sample, we loved it and had to place a new order so that we could get the glaze. Soooo happy we did! Yes, we are on the east coast (NY). Counters came from a company named Westwood Granite (Cortland Manor)- they were FANTASTIC!!

I think we'll be looking at counters in the next few weeks but I'm afraid the quartzite will be out of our price range. My builder thinks it will be upwards of $75 a square foot. We are in NJ. Does this sound about right to you?

Actually, $75 a sq foot seems low. In Westchester County, the quotes we received ranged from $85-$112 a sq foot for the Super White Quartzite. Be sure to ask whether they charge for the slab or only the sq footage you use as well as whether the price is for full install and sealing. The price will also go up if you select a fancier edge.

These are available at Home Depot and IKEA in various sizes. Very affordable

Wow, I wonder if the price was with a builder's discount. My gut is he was quoting him for a white-ish granite, rather than quartzite. I'm finding a lot of people are confusing quartzite with granite and quartz. Bummer. Even $75 per square foot was out of our price range. Thanks again for all the info!

I have been on the process of remodeling my house for about 10 months now. One of the things I struggled the most was my kitchen counter. I wanted marble so badly but with 2 kids I knew it was not the smartest idea. My builder recommended a fairly new product. It's porcelain with the look of marble, so it's super durable, looks exactly like marble, and it's cheaper than marble. There is a showroom in Chicago and I saw the material- I was blown away!!! Looks amazing! I am waiting for the quote and will decide weather or not to use it. I have seen Quartz and granite too, but I haven't found one that I love as much as marble.

Laurenc26 - Did you go with the porcelain countertop?

No, I didn't. I ended up with the whitest granite I could find, which was a very unique River White. The gray veins were much looser than all of the other River Whites I've seen. I got it from Everest Marble, in NJ. I had never heard of porcelain countertops until now!

I ordered my porcelain counter tops today. I'm really excited since I have seen the product in person and I absolute loved it, but nervous to see it at home. I'm sure it's not exactly like marble but it is so close it's exactly what I wanted. I just could not find any granite or Quartz that convinced me like this product did. I will post pictures when they arrive and get installed in about 8 weeks. I am posting the pics of the counter I saw in person.

Wow! Its gorgeous Valemor. Turns out the Porcelain supplier in my area (vancouver BC) is going to be even more than the pricey Quartz I originally wanted :( Good luck with your kitchen!

I'm so intrigued by the porcelain counters you've found! I really thought I had exhausted all the marble-like options. They look beautiful in the pic and I'm sure they will look great installed! I've attached a pic of the granite we used for our counters. I'm sorry I don't have a good picture of it installed. Not quite marble, but the best we could find.

Pampriester, thanks! We searched high and low for a marble alternative. After testing some really fabulous looking quartzites at home, we realized nothing was as durable as granite. The granite we finally chose was River White, and we got it from Everest Marble in NJ. I had dismissed River White at other yards because the gray waves were too "tight", but this one was unique in that the waves were much looser. I will say, though, that the slabs do have many garnet deposits which you can't really see in the picture. The granite definitely gives an overall white/gray vibe to the kitchen, but upon closer inspection the burgundy spots are easily visible. A second contender for us at Everst Marble was something called Salinas White. Not as many garnet deposits, rather "white" as far as granites go, but not really wavy/veiny like marble. Yet another one we liked was called "Snowflakes". This one was at PMI, also in NJ. It had a lot of gray waves, very pretty, but darker overall than the River White and it had many garnet deposits. The salesman, Paul, was awesome. I wish we could have bought from him. Good luck in your search!
