    I have several varieties of Japanese maples in full sun. They are doing very well. I also have one in dappled light which is doing quite well. I also have a lace leaf predominantly in shade which is not doing so well. I plan to move him to direct sunlight overhanging the pond tomorrow. whether this "radical" move is advised...well, I'll have to wait till next year to comment on that. I have found if you are going to disadvantage ANY plant with less sunllight than they naturally enjoy, use excellent soil and water accordingly. Good luck to you and your tree :)

      That is a red laceleaf Japanese maple....

      Possibly a Crimson Queen variety of Japanese Maple. Impossible to tell at this distance.

      I think this is a bloodgood japanese maple. I have both bloodgood and laceleafs ( in green and red) in my gardens. they are especially beautiful cascading my pond. it could also be an inaba shidare; the combination of a bloodgood japanese maple crossbred with a laceleaf japanese maple which produces the lace like foliage of the lace leaf with the darker red color of the bloodgood.

      They can take full sun, but horticulturally - maples like these would be understory plants and as such would prefer a partial sun/shifting shaded area...

      lace leaves come in green and red. "Red dragon" is a name given to the red lace leaf.

      There are many different varieties of red lace leaf or dissectum japanese maples. Red Dragon, Crimson Queen, Inaba Shidare, Tamukeyama to name a few. You really can not tell the difference in cultivator without seeing the leaf pattern up close.
