I feel that regular twins bed are acceptable for kids, and maybe for adults that aren't tall. My young (3 and 7) daughters both sleep in regular twin beds. When my husband, 6'1" tall, lays in their beds his feet hang over. Something to consider if you plan to have adult company.

I agree about going with XL twins so your male guests will be comfortable.

I would say that it depends upon how often you think you would have adult guests in the room. If it is very seldom, I'd say go with what fits in the room. My 5'10" husband has a twin bed that he sleeps on in another room when his snoring gets to me. If you go with a standard twin, you might want to avoid having a footboard.

Wow, years later but I have been debating this for about 6 months. I was able to use the twin XLs at a university dorm and I get the attraction but the cost jump is tremendous and as stated in another comment, I am wondering if I get enough tall visitors to make that cost make sense. I do have another room with a queen so with family I can always switch around. Seems like have made my decision lol
