kitchen cabinets: reface, paint ???

This is my kitchen, I have pondered painting the cabinets for years but I really don't like the arched doors. Our house was built in 58 and has a more contemporary/mid century feel in the other rooms of course the budget is the smaller the better. I like white kitchens but am also interested in gray or maybe blk paint for the cabinets. I am also looking at new appliances. The floor will stay. any suggestions?

I would reface. The arches be gone;)

Ditto. My parents have cabinets like this and while they look better painted they still look like dated painted cabinets.

Get new doors and have the boxes refaced. Go white. It will be timeless. Can you remove the valance board over the window?

It is open to the dining, living room and front hall. the paint color will be neutral probably revere pewter. very little wall in the kitchen.

has anyone every seen wood added to these type of cabinet doors to cover the arch and make them look more like mission style. we are handy and have the tools.

If the backside of the door is flat, could you flip them around and add the shaker frame around the edges?

Bummer. I think adding a layer on top of the front to make them mission style might be too thick and make the doors stand way out from the cabinet. Before you buy or make new doors, try taking apart a door to see how it's constructed. You might be able to just replace the arched rails. Or....maybe just add a thin veneer to the front, frame it out, and paint it. Or...just to build new doors! I bet you could.

Many mid-century style kitchens have wood cabinets. If the boxes are in good shape, I would replace the doors and drawer fronts with a matching wood. That will save on painting costs, and then you can update the counter tops and backsplash to be more style-appropriate.
