I perfer the dark blue. The maroon seems a bit dated to me and the light blue would be trading the "patterned" blue/gray rug for a solid colour. You have some green/gray/yellow tones in the fireplace. Have you thought of pulling those colours into your space? Like Lucidos shows in the rug above, all the colours in the fireplace are present in that rug.

I'm wondering if you are having a hard time because you are getting colour clashes where you don't expect them to be. Right now I can see that the sofa and fireplace surround are arguing a bit. The fireplace is more green/yellow and the sofa is more gray/blue. To get this to work, you will want the fireplace colours to be integrated in with the sofa hues.

You might have to look at dealing with the sofa or the fireplace surround. Those are the two things causing some colour issues. The peach coloured tiles aren't helping...but they are neutral enough that you can ignore them.

I am not home now so I will take a pic of that when I get home. Here's a close up of fireplace. There is some grey in it as well.

I like that coppery tone but it's so hard to pull off without looking orange. A few other options for you..muted soft tones seem to work best. I would integrate coppery tones in the room though.

I like those. I thought of using flor to get a rug because I can customize the size without covering up the fireplace tiles. They don't seem to have a lot of variety in the colors I want. But I do like how I can customize the size.

It all depends how you lay out the room as to needing a custom size. For that sofa I can see the corner ( where your littleone is in the image) facing the center of the fireplace. Give me the dimensions of the room and sectional and I'll mock it up for you.

The room is approx 15x14. We moved the sectional flipped to where it is now. So it's by the wall by fireplace. So window is now open. Was thinking to put two small chairs near there.

Actually any of those would work as long as you bring in accent pieces to tie it together. I tried mocking up your room but the measurements of the sofa can't be correct. Can you take a picture with the new layout?

Hi---you have to pull the cool and warm hues together in this space and because of all the angles, curves are a must. I recall this rug---anyway, here is what I recommend. Add some toss pillows to the sofa... Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

Love the scroll print ivory-beige rug suggested by lucidos...it picks up the colour & pattern so well from the fireplace & goes fabulously well with floor, couch, wall colour

Hi---the rug should have curves, circles, organic design---everything has angles/lines in your room. You need to soften the edges. When selecting a rug, do take your tile and sofa color into consideration. The carpet tiles look "off" with your existing elements. Hope you find this info helpful. :)

The pattern is jarring ..feel the living room requires much softer looking rug.
See how in reference pic the rug is used for hallway which is just a transition area not resting area.

And Nat you are so correct I forgot the tile floor.

That's what I'm thinking more and more that I need to forget flor. I liked them cuz I could cover a larger area without the rug being a rectangle.

It had the green and teal in it which should work. Now the rug I'm thinking should be solid with no design. I can add patterned pillows to the sectional, some solid drapes to pull the room tog.

Thanks Natalie. When we were building our house we decided to get the cheap tile and replace later. The choices were limited and the nicest ones were wayyyy over our budget.

Then find a floor lamp that takes a shade and you can do any number of things to the shade to get a soft yellow effect such as paint it or add cloth or wallpaper.

Then an accent table and coffee table, artwork and perfect.

I don't know, it's hard to tell if the chair will go with that rug. The floor (tile) is different in lucidos mockup.

I think a solid rug seems to be best choice. The original rug lucidos recommended seems to just blend in with everything else.

Exactly Faddu. When I looked at the images of the room I realized you needed the chairs..from there the design just grew legs. I think you are on a perfect track now. You will do well young padawan :)

I'll mock up some things tommorow..better pictures would help a lot clearer and a bit further back toward the entry.

Although that original rug is lovely I think the chair pattern you evolved to is more modern and has more versatility.

Lucidos what was wrong with the sectional by the window like the pic I added? My husband hates it the way it is. He doesn't like how it's making the room look smaller and making the walkway to our master bedroom small. He's into open spaces and the way it was in the pic made the room more open he says.

Your sectional is a bit large for that window corner the end hangs into the entry but if that is your preference ..by all means. You should put a floor plant or a coat stand or a tall vase to that tiny corner it creates if you want it there.

What if it were squared to the FP? The end that is against the wall-rotated to be directly across from the FP; console table behind-maybe?

No then it's not easy to sit in the room. I'm ok with the way it is. It's the husband who's not happy lol.

Faddu. Good design makes everyone in the family comfortable and happy. What if you eliminated the one portion of the sectional then faced the sofa in front of the fireplace and put a chair on each side?

It would look strange because one side of sofa would be armless. He really wanted a sectional for the room and now we realized a sectional doesn't work.

I think the longer portion has 2 arms? I'm suggesting taking the shorter portion out of the equation entirely.

Honestly faddu1, I'm no designer, but I do have eyes. :) Don't get discouraged..... your fireplace is gorgeous, I love the colors in the stone/tiles. The sectional is nice and great for a family. I think you can make it work. Just find a rug YOU like to start with. Good luck, it's a great space! :)
