Hi there,
You can create the outdoor "rug" using handmade cement tiles in both patterned tiles and plain, solid-colored field tiles. Here's a recent design idea we posted: http://www.aventetile.com/portfolio/146.cfm?startrow=37. Hope that helps!

Is your location subject to freeze/thaw cycles. If not, then I'd recommend using cement tiles. Cement tiles can be customized and there are more options than with glazed terra cotta.
