DIY French Hall Console

I needed a console for my long hallway. I looked for weeks but couldn't find anything I liked, so I decided to refinish a dresser that I bought off of Craig's list.

Absolutely! Slimsnoop80 we have only been here a few months.. One thing at a time! We have nothing but time. Molding, new windows and doors will be coming down the line.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments. It took over two weeks to complete this project. Meggielh, the "silver paint" is actually silver leaf. You can buy it in sheets at Hobby Lobby. It is messy and takes a long time to complete, but the end result is pretty cool. The gold is gold leafing.

You need a couple of great French chairs, maybe plaid cushions, and mirror above. Every hall needs a mirror.

You did a fabulous job Elitha - ever consider doing this as a career?

    Good Afternoon Reils4,
I sanded the dresser with medium grit sand paper and a lot of elbow grease. My shoulders are hurting thinking about it. If I decide to do another project, I might buy some sort of electric sander.

    Hello Ward Designs,

Thank you! I have not thought about doing this as a career. I might continue doing it for fun and an occasional stress reliever. I'm hoping to understand some more about the science of refinishing furniture. It will help me come up with some more creative ideas.

One way you can take your talent for the gold and silver leafing you did on this wonderfully done furniture piece in another direction is to:
Choose a mirror or another piece of furniture...
Paint first coat a black or deep red apply leaf over paint...leave some space but not too much...randomly between pieces of leafing.
Buff off excess pieces...you may stop now or take some brown shoe polish and apply and remove in light stages....will give a nice aged look to either silver or gold leaf.

I did the exact same thing, only I painted mine. It is so great to have the extra storage as well.

    Okay,

After a couple long months, I've finally had time (or remembered) to post the completed after pictures. I hope you are all inspired to love something old and make it new. xoxo

So so pretty! Love seeing it all staged, too. The paint really brought out the details in that piece. ENJOY!

Hard to believe it's the same console. Amazing work and stunning result!

With your talent I can see you creating lampshades (thinner and taller) for your "new" console.

You can use a black shade that is gold lined.

Paint, cover in fabric or also embellish the shades with trim.
