townse, you do not have to get an exact match for your current bookcase. As I mentioned above, you just need one that is the same height and width and almost the same color. It needs a mate in my opinion. Wherever you try to use it in this room alone, it will look awkward and will be hard to decorate around for room balance.

Your furniture needs to create a tighter grouping where the arms of any of the furniture, sofa, chairs are very close to each other, including a coffee table and end tables.

I would keep the entry open. You have more than enough room to do that.

1. The chairs would probably be away from the window ..... or ..... possible bookcases instead of the etageres in this room?
2. Two bookcases could be on each side of window.
3. Furniture is close to each other.
4. Chairs can also be opposite the sofa with an end table between.

I definitely think a patterned chair could work, but I think the chair should be a bit larger/heavier than the brown one you have in the picture now. You're getting there. :)

Maybe something with arms? Look back at your inspiration pictures. It will help, you like them, use them. :)

Also agree with zazz. I feel the brown chair is too visually light in weight. A chair with arms would be cozier and used more. I would use two matching chairs.

Good design is repetition of style, color and placements within the room for balance. You would have 3 entirely different pieces in the group. It would take more effort to bring them visually together to feel most comfortable to the eye.

At this time I think the best place for the single bookcase is on the wall in the dining area that butts the kitchen. The color and size are killing that room.

Your choices are light colored with a solid weighty feel. I don't have measurements yet but the sofa should be on the long wall or with it's back to the dining area with a sofa table behind it. Chair grouping at the window. The a long low bookcase down the long wall no taller than the window sill. Your ceiling is to low to carry the height of the tall bookcase unless you add several. A shorter one will make the room feel taller. If you could turn the one you have on it;s side you would see how that lengthens the room and makes the ceiling feel taller.

I agree with lucidos.

The only place I could see the bookcase is at the entry under the 4 panel vent and placed on the wood floor area. However, I think that will prevent you from a comfortable arrangement on the large entry wall.

lucidos-the sitting room is 14x13, if you include the dining room then it is 14x27.

I came up with this for the room. The furniture and color selections grabbed from things that you suggested. Although I can't see a separate color for a feature wall in your space I can see a several shade darker color in the entry area to the kitchen.

Lots of posts, so hope I am not repeating anything, but here are a few suggestions and thoughts.

First of all, I love your floor and hope it will stay. If you want one shaggy rug, it would look nice with your cream couch, but I would overdue the rugs as to hide the floor.

I like the first couch picture that you posted the best.

I can picture a Starburst mirror on your wall and a couple throws down to tie in colors and give a soft, romantic feel.

Along with your off-white colors, go with pale agua, pale yellows and salmon.

Mix some modern with a little "Old World" feel to it. Have fun.

Edit: Ok, just saw your New Furniture picture and like it very much. I am not loving the bookcase however. It is too narrow and the darker wood just doesn't go. I would go with a light and wider bookcase which would balance your room out.

As far as another chair, I would go with an all wood chair in a lighter tone of wood, perhaps a chickory color. The darker wood is not looking that good with your beautiful floor.

Lynnie-Love the idea of the starburst mirror, I definitely would like to add alittle glitz and glam. I will probably just go with another tub chair to keep me from wrecking my brain. What do you mean by adding "Old World" pieces. Any examples? I know the dark bookcase doesn't fit but I think if it placed right and add color decorative pieces then it work it's way in the room. Hopefully!

Hi townse---I recommend 2matching chairs---whether it be two solid, or two print---same would be better. I recommend looking for a pattern to incorporate into this space. Perhaps, a pillow. This will give you a color to build on. Are you sticking to your original color scheme of creams and blues?

Oh, I forgot to mention-the bookcase is too much for the long wall. Nothing higher than 48" on that wall-besides art/mirrors. Keep us posted & have Fun!

I'm going to load pictures of the room with the sofa on the wall. Also, I purchased an 8x10 area rug from Home Depot. I didn't get the shaggy rug as planned, but I do like the one I picked out. It is cream with grey. I think the room has enough grey, I need to start incorporating my blues. Feel free to add suggestions! The room is still under construction.

Good selection of furnishings. What is the purpose of the hassock? It isn't useful floating in the center. Can you pick up a second one and use the pair as a coffee table, 18" from the sofa? Then add a great piece of art above it. The torchiere lamp is a bit dated and the tall bookcase is throwing the arrangement off. Perfect location for it would be under the return air vent on the wall left of the dining room opening, but the tile runway there might hinder that placement. Any chance you can match the hardwood and take your living area to the stairwell wall? Now that you're going more modern, how are you planning to handle the formal swag window treatments? I suggest using textured bamboo or other fiber roman shades under stationary panels hung floor to ceiling and mounted outside the bay, matching with the same treatment in the dining area.

decoenthusiaste-I pulled the pouf from another room, wasn't planning on leaving it there. I agree the lamp is outdated, that will be replaced also.....just taking my time, the holiday season has my money tied up. I agree the tall bookcase would look best under the vent on the left wall but the floor change is blocking it from fitting properly. No, matching extending the wood floor is the least of my concern right now. Just trying to decorate the room first, but I do agree that would look nice. Yes, the formal swag curtains are going to go I promise.lol Do you like the place of the sofa for now? What can be nice reasonalbe purchase to help this room. Should I replace the tall lamp now? If so, do you have any suggestions?

You have come a long way in that room. Yes, the holidays are on us but you have a room that will work for guests now.

One thing you may try with the lamp is to get glass paint at a craft store and add color to the glass shade so it doesn't disappear in the room. It's worth a shot and won't cost much. The french blue in the poof works nicely as a color in the room.

Find an old coffee table and perhaps end tables in the buy/sell ads for $20.00 and paint in an off white. It will hold you for the holiday and you will only be out pocket change and a few hours of time.

have you tried centering the couch under the window, and turning the rug. Would you then have room for 2 side tables on either side of the couch?

I worked part time at Home Goods, and only if it wasn't busy [they didn't really like it] Rarely - we'd phone around to nearby stores to find the extra curtain, etc....

If you don't end up finding another panel, you can put a neutral color in between the curtains. I got some curtains from Burlington Coat factory, since there dark anyway I'm going to put white or a cream color in between to keep the room light for the sitting room. I only bought the table so I might look at bob's for dining chairs or home goods. So, the next time I post, hopefully I will have a dining table, server a settee in the sitting room and curtains in both the living and sitting room...oh and a coffee and end table. That's alot, but I took along break I want these 2 rooms done before another christmas.lol

Townse, Nice table..... what type chairs are you looking for? :) Joss & Main has a lot of sales and Wayfair seems to have a ton.... though I can't vouch for service personally because I haven't ordered anything..... yet! :) If you breeze through my dilemma a few people talked about ordering from them. :)
