I would be interested in what people post as alternatives. Although yes, you could run the extra up the wall behind bookcases,

Where are the rugs eventually going to end up? With children or other relatives? Maybe give them your less favorite rugs now and buy new ones of the correct size! Or potentially trade with a reputable dealer for smaller ones?

I can't say which are my favorites if that means I have to give some up. I know I will have extra (I do have about a dozen in smaller sizes as options). A lot of the extra very large ones I will probably use layered in the as yet unconverted garage with its concrete floor. It's on the HVAC system and will probably serve as an additional library (I have about 50K books).

I have done something enviable. I knew where I was moving for retirement, so I bought in that city in early 2011 at the bottom of the market (old enough to use 401k funds without penalty). So I bought a $350K foreclosed house for $129K! It's up to $300K already. Previous owners gutted the house before they left of all light fixtures, appliances, the HVAC, and all the sinks. Thus, I was able start with a nearly clean slate, reflected in the price, and spend the money on exactly what I wanted.

The decorating advantage to all the books and carpets (and lots of wood and leather) is that I can have really bold paint color on all the walls because all those things suck up light.

Side note: A hilarious novel by Sue Townsend in The Queen and I. Written in the 80s when Prince Charles was still married to Diana. A Republican government takes over and legally eliminates the Royal Family who all have to go on the Dole and live in a housing project. Cutting down truly enormous rugs is one of the things they have to do.
