This house has such a clumsy "Victorian" style that staggered shingle would only look even more gimmicky. Straight will be simpler and fit with the massing of the facade. There are enough elements competing for your visual attention that you don't need more busy-ness.

Straight shakes look more clean and crisp.

my builder is recommending alternate rows of straight edge and staggered edge shingles to cut down the "busy" look. Anyone seen this done?

I’m not sure if I should do staggard or straight shakes. I want to do white shakes and whitewash the brick. Black shutters and no awning. What do you think?

Eileen you should start your own post rather than restarting this decade old one. But I will bite- no staggered shakes on your house. Rethink whitewash, please buy the correct size shutter if they are staying.

I dislike painted brick and everyone is painting brick white- boring. Your house is perfect for shutters if they are the correct size, the current ones are all wrong
