Can you show us photos of the opposite end, and say whether TV will be viewed in this room?

What style do you like? Your couch, chair, lamp and rug are modern, and the coffee table traditional, even rustic. I'd replace the coffee table with one that is more in keeping with a modern, lighter style. Or paint it a lighter color.

If your budget is tight, built-in bookcases may not be where your money is best spent. I'm personally not a fan of the look of a fireplace flanked by bookcases.

Studio 10001 is correct, first decide how you are going to use the room and arrange the furniture so it functions well for its use, whether TV viewing, reading, entertaining. Then you will know what pieces you still need.

Our style is contemporary (?). We are in love with the look of built ins, but will likely wait until we can save enough. The table is rustic, it is reclaimed wood hand carved with a soapstone top and the sectional is more modern. What could we do to tie everything together?

Love the couch and lamp, I do agree that the coffee table and couch are two differrent pieces. But I'm sure someone may show you how that could work, since you need to keep it. I think your room is beautiful. I love your floors, area rug, sectional, and chair. Also, love your wall color. All the colors in the room work very well together. I think you just need something on the wall behind the sofa (maybe a canvas painting ) and something on the wall across from the sofa. I'm thinking that wall would be good to place a flat screen tv. if you are planning to have a television in this room. You could probably use an end table next to the sofa-maybe a glass or metal table, since you have an eclectic style. Beautiful space. I wouldn't change anything.

Hard to tell for sure in a photo, but the coffee table may be too long for the couch. It should be about 18 inches from the seating area on both sides. If it sticks out at the end, it is too long. It may be better in another room.

Can you pull your couch away from the windows a few inches? It looks squashed, and if you get drapes, which I recommend, it will look even better pulled away a bit. Your rug may be too small, but whatever size, move it closer so that the front sofa legs sit on it.

I agree your home is beautiful and a great start. I also agree the coffee table isn't just right. But, what may help, on a teeny, tiny budget, is to just remove the lower shelf from the coffee table to just have the top and four legs. That will open up the "space", show off your rug and make the table a bit less old fashioned.

I think your floors are beautiful, and don't think it's necessary to cover them with a bigger area rug at this time. I like Darzy's idea about working with the coffee table for now until you find one that you really love, especially since you are working on a budget I think you have a great style and a great start and should focus on finding pieces that you really love-adding interesting pieces-that sometimes takes time. Once you have your tv on one wall and artwork on the other, your room will begin to come together. I think linen or sheer panels on the windows would soften the area. Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have nice curtains in contemporary styles.

I really like your coffee table, too and think it will not feel too big once you add an table at end of the sofa. That will extend your sitting area. Maybe you could try placing the chair on the same wall as the sofa next to the end table so the sitting area faces the wall where the tv will be. You could choose a color 1 shade darker than the wall for drama or a shade lighter to lighten the room up....You may look at West Elm for ideas, also.

Here are some pictures that might help you ---I would place the side table on the regular side of the sofa and the chair next to it, so that you are defining your seating space. Maybe a mixed metal and wood side table would look nice with your existing pieces. It looks like you have the room. I'm thinking rectangular instead of round. Suggestions of places to look: Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Ikea. If you are thinking of placing a console table underneath the tv (not sure if you are planning to mount tv to wall) you may want find something to compliment the side table to bring the entire space together.

One more thing: It looks like you have nice blinds on the window. I'm thinking these serve the purpose for keeping light out. You may want to wait on the curtains and may find that you don't need them once you have some artwork up on the wall, tv, up, and side table in place. If the blinds are temporary, you may like roman shades instead of curtains, so that they are not taking up wall space. Love your wall color. What color is it?

Hi. Love your room, you have a great start. Two things stand out to me: one is that the room looks very long and narrow? Is this so? The other is that everything is so neutral/no contrast. So we can work on those and then little things like the sofa and coffee table being different styles will diminish.

For the longness, is it possible you can turn your sofa and rug 90 degrees and float it facing the fireplace???? Your current furniture arrangement accentuates the length of the room making if feel uncozy

And decide on color: If you want to stay neutral (brown/tan/white/black…) then you need to bump up contrast by things like a wall paint color that contrasts your sofa more. You'd also want to bring in other texture/contrast such as large black and white print above fireplace, Dark pillow(s) or throw on your sofa, baskets, sculptural shapes, metal…. Or if you're willing to go with a color or two find an inspiration piece (probably either fireplace art or curtains) which have a lot of neutrals, but one or two colors. Then use those colors to add pillows, throws, lamps, trays...

Great idea, mrsmom to try to float the sectional facing the fireplace. It may be tough hanging the tv over the mantle, though, (it looks like a small area and very high) but it's worth the try. Here is another picture that may help-not at all your style but it helps see the arrangement of the furniture. Still love all your color choices and all the neutrals in the room. Adding the texture and abstract piece of art with lots of neutrals will make the room come together.

Can the TV go on that wall next to the arched door rather than over the fireplace?

Hi - I really loved the suggestion to switch up the location of the sectional to make the room feel much more cozy. That said, if in front of the fireplace, its a tough place to view TV as pointed out by Karen. I'd be curious to see what the sectional would look like if put against the wall facing the windows and the TV inbetween the windows?

Paint the bottom portion of the coffee table a grey or grey wash maybe with some silver detailing. Then put a large mirrored tray on the bottom portion.

Move the rug under the front legs of the sofa.

I don't see you having enough room if you face the sectional to the fireplace but the bendiness of the image may be throwing me off.

A pair for wing chairs at the fireplace would look great. That would set up 2 areas in the room.

The window - paned wall decor would look fantastic over the fireplace.

Your coffee table might look good with an antiqued white finish, like the 2 "legs" that are standing on the hearth in the lower right picture, in the post above.

Or a crackle finish.

I suggest you take your teeny tiny budget to the hardware store for the following:
Drop cloth for drapes
White paint for the coffee table ( keep the beautiful slate!)
A huge carpet remnant - big enough for the sectional to go on and still have a border.
Then you are going to TJMaxx, and get the best pillows you can afford, and one large accessory for the coffee table - just one, so make it good.

And here is why:
You need to save your teeny tiny budget to make a bigger one for more furnishings, and what you buy now only saves money if it can be used in the final decor,too.
Your room is large enough for two seating groups, and with a split focal ( TV and fireplace), it will probably need one. A large rug will eventually separate those areas, and for now will give the furniture you do have a much fuller look. Your smaller area rug can even be casually layered over it. Staying neutral w this carpet and drapes means they can evolve as the room does.
Painting the coffee table a warm or off-white will make the slate show better, and the piece you place on top will be the real attraction, as will the new cushions - both drawing the eye to the middle of the room,where all the action is.

Now, when budget permits, you can build out from the middle. Re-adjust your pieces to balance against ea. addition, and in this way you can grow the room and maintain a sense of finish at all stages. Best of luck w your project.

There isn't enough room on either side if we turned the sectional to face the fireplace, we have tried it every which way and the way now is the most comfortable looking. The painted table legs are stunning! It might be a bit before I get the courage. The coffee table is from arhaus and cost us a bit more than we would ever normally spend

Split up the sectional.....

It's tough to see these pictures clearly due to the glare. Could you take a picture standing from the mantel (and close the blinds) to get an image of the room from that point? I don't think that the sectional can be split bc it would have one armless side. That would look very strange. I love lucidos idea about placing the window pane over the mantel. That would make a great statement-focal point in the room.

I love your fresh flowers in the center of the coffee table. Maybe a pair or set of 3 candle holders (glass) would be pretty on the corner of the coffee table-or a nice bowl/vase in the center and the flowers on the corner. Look at pictures on Houzz for ideas how to accessorize coffee tables. Different heights look nice.

Have you tried to place the sectional on the opposite wall as suggested by Chris Stanely? This way, the sofa wouldn't be overlapping the windows and you would have plenty of room to hang some curtains/ panels.

It doesn't look like your room is large enough for 2 sitting areas to me, but you do have some extra space to maybe place a ceramic pot with a live plant in it by the window closest to the fireplace. I always love fresh flowers and live plants in a room.

I still think you need an end table and should try to move the chair on the same wall as the sofa with the floor lamp in between the 2. And you need a piece of artwork with the accent colors you are working with. From this angle, it looks like your area rug has black in it and your pillows are yellow. I like those color combinations. If you decide to keeps those accent colors, I would find artwork to bring those colors into the room.

Personally, I think art makes and finishes a room.

With all that being said, I still think you have some great pieces-and great style. Love your floors, wall color, rug, and sectional.

Take your time, save your money for now, and do it right. Look at lots of pictures for inspiration. I still think you have a great start and just need some fine-tuning. Good luck.

Could you scooch the sectional down, away from the fireplace? Maybe center it with the window farthest from fp? The tv could then be placed on oposite wall. Then move chair to fp area (left or right side) for a nice cozy spot? This could be a starting point as mentioned above to divide your long room into 2 areas. Really nice room, enjoy taking your time!

About the coffee table. I'm so sorry I even suggested the paint on that piece. But do put a large mirrored tray on the bottom portion you need to bounce light since you cut it off with the sofa back to the window.

Can you give us the size of the room and give us a view of the side opposite the fireplace? A fast sketch would be best noting the size of any windows, doors, openings. I'm thinking this connects to another room and what you do or suggest on one side needs to follow through to the other if it's viewable.

I haven't read every comment but agree you should "doctor" up the coffee table and make do for now. I'd replace it with a round glass one and get a larger rug down the road. Try the sectional on the right wall with large art above it, and a pair of chairs on the window side of the space with a table and lamp between them. Once the FP bookcases are in, add a pair of small scale arm chairs flanking it so you can sit and read beside a crackling fire. Here's a chart to help sizing table and lamp. Drapes with fabric romans under them will go a long way toward warming it up.

I'm starting to think two seating areas would be the best. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I've drawn a diagram of the room without, and with furniture, accent tables near the fireplace I've drawn but we don't have. The rug in the room currently is. 5'x8' and the room is 11.5x22.5 so I think another rug will be necessary. I need suggestions on the following: accent chairs, rug, drapes, and a side table. Good morning everyone! Still looking for a few suggestions on side table, rug and accent chairs. Side table may be tricky since it has to be taller, 24"+, than most so reaching around the arm of sectional won't be impossible. Thank you for all your help and suggestions!

Hi, I'd pull the rug fully under the sectional so that its front legs are sitting on it. I think I might center the sofa between the windows, and pull it out from the wall a few inches.

I've attached a cb2 side table that is almost 28" inches high. You could set a standing lamp behind the sectional and table as karen showed in one of her first photos. I also would like to see a more contemporary chair in a bright color. Linen curtains, either plain or a contemporary print. If you went with print curtains, you could get a larger, natural fibre rug or a flokati or shag type. You can find those at a lot of places reasonably now.

You said you'd tried the sectional in other places. Does that include the opposite wall, as suggested by some other posters?
