It seems like the problem you are having with your kitchen can be solved with some new finishes. It is a bit difficult to tell what types of flooring we are dealing with, but the transition to the family room is not successful. You should have the kitchen floor stripped and stained to match the color of the darker floor. Once you go dark with the kitchen floor you will want to add a rug under the table so we don't lose it visually. You could go with a neutral transitional rug or a unique playful rug like the wood grain one shown below. Have the cabinets painted in a medium gray like Sherwin-Wiliams Dovetail 7018 or if you don't want to go quite that dark, Mindful Gray 7016. Be sure to use a cabinet paint in a semi-gloss finish and always check the colors in your space before making a final decision. Google "modern gray kitchen cabinets" for some beautiful examples. Add a subway mosaic glass tile backsplash. Backsplash the exposed wall behind the computer as well as over the counters up to the cabinets on the other side of the refrigerator and around the sink. Look for a glass tile with a few variations of color for interest. You can stay will neutral hues or go with a hint of green for some added color. Hope this helps!
