Can you please give me suggestions for over the couch in the living room above? That shelf used to be over the buffet until I changed rooms. I think the shelf is outdated now

Here is is again. I couldn't find a coffee table I liked so I painted this old oak one pale yellow. Artwork is hard to choose when it has to go with the colorful chair and pillows. The shelf is from the 80s and that is not good. Friend suggested I just cover the heart cutout with a decorative wood piece. Help!

You could always go with a large piece of artwork over the sofa -- even a nice large mirror. But if you want to keep the plates, just lose the shelf and put maybe a large matching platter in the center and these plates around it (lovely plates, by the way). It will look very "Southern Living" and traditional. If that's not the look you want, go with the large artwork or large mirror.

I think that is what I will do. I have inherited the whole set and I still like them. Hubby will be happy because it is no cost. Should I arrange them in a circle?

Your shelf is not outdated at all....it is just too high. I love shelves that turn in to gallery walls, but it is too high to enjoy what is on it.

If you saw it up close you would agree. It has a heart cut out in center.

Is the heart on the back of it? Does the back stand up higher than the shelf? Can the back be sawed off to eliminate the heart?

Yes, do a grouping of the plates and make the work lower to the sofa. It's to be enjoyed by those who are seated in the room, not standing as if in a museum.

Which one looks better for over the buffet? I saw the horse on another post and kept going back to it. Went to Home Goods and there it was. The other is made out of an old window. That one is my daughter's so I will have to get her to make another one. Either one would be hung about 6 inches above buffet

Would you ever consider putting the plates over the buffet with a few pieces ON the buffet and then the horse over the couch? Just take down the shelf?

Will you do the math to double check? Measure the couch length and the horse. The horse needs to be 2/3 or CLOSE to the couch.

I just love the idea of the dishes with the buffet in the dining room and the color of the dishes....how does that look with the buffet?

I might love the horse over your grandfather's buffet, but not over couch with its delicate colors. After the heart patch would you consider a soft medium blue whatever's nice with yellow? You live in Florida, and others have posted things which bring in nature's map of blue etc.

I think horse is going over buffet. I like it a lot. I bought plate hangers so tomorrow the shelf comes down. The wall paint is new. If I repaint in blue I will have to change curtains in dining room and it would be too much with map. It's so funny that you change one thing and it effects everything else

That window frame with the stuffing in it looks like insulation or are they sea shells? Doesn't do a thing for me on the monitor.

Why not try something more modern to crate interest! A modern lamp, just one, an interesting sculpture with a cool mirror hung lowly in beside the lamp. Create a clean contemporary grouping. I would stay away from anything to traditional or chintzy. To easy and not very interesting. Beautiful piece of furniture.

If you move the horse picture to the right you could balance it with a single tall lamp on the left. There are many ways to arrange items on and above the buffet. It depends if you want the formal look of symmetry or something more relaxed and asymmetrical. Think in odd numbers for a better look. One is an odd number so you could just have your centered picture and see if you can live with the simplicity of space. It gives a certain presence to the picture and the buffet.

Really like the picture and perhaps look for lamps that are less delicate and I would also add an arrangment in the middle. With the art's swirling lines, I would consider lamps and accessories that have curved lines that almost have a quality of motion when you look at them. houzz=]; [houzz=]

Hang a mirror with a simple but large frame in the same wood stain/ color above the buffett. Make it just a bit narrower.. It will balance the piece

Would you say the 1930's or 40's that your grandfather made this piece?

If so, I would spend some time looking for a mirror from that time. Mirrors were always over sideboards, for some reason. Maybe they needed the reflection for more light?

Thank you for your comments. Judy - I wish I knew more about the piece. All my dad ever said was that it was made by his grandfather along with a lot of other furniture and clocks in the house. It was in our house since I was two. When I got married, it was given to me. My father has passed away so I can't ask any questions. My dad was born in 1938 and I believe it was before his birth

Large antique looking mirror would look nice with taller candlestick lamp on left with 11 inch height decorative basket/statue/ or even small stack of bound books. My first choice would be a pic of the man who made it and his family. Beautiful piece. You can see the love.

What about this mercury glass lamp for buffet? I still want to keep the horse pic. If so, do I buy one or two? It is 33 inches tall. From pottery barn

I have a similar cabinet like this but I put a large rectangular rural picture frame above it, rural scenes really enhance the area. I also added large vases at either side and a fruit bowl in the center.
