Does this rug work with my colors?

I like it, I think texture is a great contrast to the leather couch, I feel like you could add some orange with your teal pillows for a little more colour. But yes it works

If you want contemporary, then go with the first rug. Although the second rug looks good with the fireplace and railing as they look now, once you paint (modernize) them, the patterned rug will look too traditional.
Thank you ward. Value the feedback. If the grey rug gives the room a more contemporary look, then I'll go for it. Will be updating the fire place and removing the railing next year.

    Thanks.

nduthu, I really like the new area rug you picked because like I said before, I'm not crazy about layering area rugs over wall to wall carpets, especially a solid rug over another solid one. In this case, I think the pattern in your new area rug works better with the fireplace and carpet. Unless you planning to pull out the carpet and put new flooring in, I would keep the patterned area rug instead of the shag. If, however, you are planning to add hardwood or tile flooring in the near future, I would go with the shag. Hope this makes sense. Also, you need to find some pillows that work better with the taupes and darker blues in the new rug. Etsy.com has some great pillows and they are reasonably priced. Also, check on West Elm. They have a great selection of contemporary pillows. Looking good! I still think you should think about painting the fireplace. It's an easy process, and you will love it!

Either put a tall floor lamp in the corner or one of the arc lamps. Also add some small prints on the smaller area of wall, vertically and a mirror on the larger area of wall unless the reflection in the mirror is not a good one.
You have it all nailed down I think.
Update, I ordered a new rug on-line which I really like, so I'll settle with this for now and focus on updating the fireplace.

Thanks for all your feedback. I'm glad I discovered Houzz!

You've done a lovely job in this room. The lamp and pillows are perfect, and the rug looks great. The only minor discordant note is the coffee table which is, I think, a bit heavy and dark. Try putting one teal object on top of it to draw it into the group.
Thanks Groveraxle. I'm in the process of looking for a new coffee table, jus haven't found a good one yet. I'll replace this one with an all glass table that is either square or triangular. I'll place a teal object on the table per your suggestion.

Hey... you keep changing the fireplace mantle with each rug :). I like either of the rectangular pictures but I would leave the mantle empty.
@nduthu, Hi, I'm glad you found a rug you like. That looks great too. Although, I had to laugh, someone suggested the same rug to me. I have a cream leather sectional, though not as big as yours. I actually like yours a lot. :) I'm glad you're happy and I'm glad I stopped in because I got a chance to see that great rug in place. I also have a pillow with the same design. lol :) Good luck on the rest of the space, great so far! I'm not being pushy, but I think painting your fireplace would knock this outta the park. :)

Beautiful rug choice - looks awesome with your sofa - you're on your way to a great looking space -- please post the finished product.
    Thanks:

Retro earth: I like the new picture on fireplace since it has some deep aqua blue- I will reduce the number of items on the mantle.

Zazfuzzroc: It's amazing how tastes can be similar. This is my first time trying to use accent color and it has worked great. I love the rug and it costs a fraction of what the other rugs cost. It's not too busy. My next big project is the fireplace and the railing:).

I sure will post the final product.

Nice choice! Looks great and you are on your way creating a great looking space. I still think painting the bricks would make your space look fabulous! It's an inexpensive way to make a dramatic change, and it will lighten up the space. It will also help tie in the contemporary look that you are trying to achieve.

Yes it does. But we agree you could use that teal color in your room a few more times OR opt for a rug that also uses that teal. It will really POP with that sofa and neutral decor. Very on trend!

I think it's great!!! However, I'm not a fan of the pillow. I think you add more vibrant colors and textures ... perhaps, red, or purple.

nduthu - Have you completed your project? We'd love to hear from you and see what you've accomplished so far.....

Love your final choice of rug? What size is it and where did you get it from?
That works much better. Elegant yet warm. Are you still going to paint your fireplace? Keep us posted.
Hi all, I haven't completed my project yet.I'm yet to redo the fire place, purchase a console or bookshelves, dining table, coffee table and find a suitable fan. I got stuck with the fan and have purchased and returned like 4 of them. Looking to purchase a coffee table and a console over the weekend. Will post updated pictures.
Deb, I purchased the rug from overstock, it's 8 x 14. I really love it. I could not find a good rug at local stores.

Great choice on rug- I think your throw pillows need to be a bigger size with such a large sectional- my daughter has a large sectional that is off white and I had 24 in pillows made for her and also a couple of throws on each one would help with your color- but your room is coming together nicely!

which of these coffee tables will work better for my space? Thankd

Narrowed down to two choices for a console. Plan to move fish tank to a different location and put a console in it's place.

Prefer the wooden base table to the chrome one. The chrome one looks bulky and won't stand out very well on the light rug.

Regarding the tv consoles - something more sleek and linear will add to your modern look - perhaps even wall mounted. (Ikea carries wall mounted consoles - they are well made and the pricing is very reasonable). I like the wood and white combo because it works well with the white leather.

Here a few for your consideration:

    Hi everyone,

An thoughts on these buffet tables for my living room? Need something at least 70 by 26 since I won't have a TV in the living room.

    Thanks.

Love pic 3 and 4. Of these two - Pic 4 is my favorite for the following reasons:

Light and airy, looks like it's floating. Love the open shelf - it adds interest to the piece and gives it a unique look.

Pic 3, my second favorite, has a clean look, it's off the floor, great detail in the legs, but not as unique and interesting as the console in Pic 4.

The top two look somewhat like bedroom dressers - heavy, boxy and go all the way down to the floor.

Love the design of the room, and the area rug looks amazing! Great choices!
Your room is looking great!! Can I ask where the sectional is from?
I agree with Ward. #4 is awesome! Love that open shelf to accessorize. Nice picks. :)
Okay. Will get pic number 4.

Found a great looking fan online. Really love it.
Maria-got the sectional from a local store in my hometown.

Good pick for the fan. Very streamlined. :)

    Hi Houzz family,

I bought a sideboard buffet that I put in the living room. My plan was to move the aquarium and put it behind the sectional, but when I did the room looked too cold and lifeless since I do not have a TV. Does this wall look too congested with the aquarium and by buffet? Thanks.
I think they kind of steal the show from each other...Is there anywhere else the tank can go? Btw, nice purchase. :)

I am not a fan of the tank there, but partly it's because the piece it is on doesn't seem to fit the tone of the room. Also, the art seems hung pretty high and the lamp seems a bit out of place. But I like where you are going with the room.

Thanks Zaz. Something seems off. The only other place to move the fish tank would be behind the sectional next to the stairs that lead to the basement. The space below the picture on the wall, or in the dining area.

You're welcome. :) Hmm? How does the tank/cabinet look from the back? I'm just wondering how it would look from that view? You're new piece is really nice and I think it fits in with your furniture well. I like fish tanks too, but I'm not fond of cleaning them. Lol :)

Wondering what tank's chest would look like exact white/ or grey of new unit? If possible.

The buffet wall does look too congested - you have a gorgeous piece (buffet) and you don't really notice it because there's too much around it. Ideally, the buffet, picture above it, and the plant should be the only things on that wall. The picture is too high and must be lowered so that the bottom of the frame is 8" above the buffet

The lamp does not work there - it's too small and looks like a lamp that s/b on a nightstand in a bedroom.

I would definitely find another space for the fish tank.

okay thanks a lot. I'm working on rearranging it and will lower the picture.
Ward, I should hang the picture that low even if I have a vaulted ceiling that is 10 feet high where the picture is?
  • PRO

Yes, the picture s/b connected to the furniture around and beneath it, otherwise it looks like it's part of nothing and is just floating way up on the wall. If your not comfortable with it being that low, try 10 or 12" above the buffet, but no higher.

    okay thanks.

Hi hour family. Here are my most recent updates. Purchased an all glass coffee table and side table and rearranged wall with buffet. The only thing I'm thinking about adding in this room is an accent chair and may be add another color in the room like purple. Then I'll move on to another room in the house. In the future I'll update fire place, remove railing, and update dining table. It has been an amazing transformation due to advice from Houzz. I knew very little about decorating until I discovered houzz. Has been a life safer. Thanks all!
