Either my post is the only one with a question on why, or this site does not show posts that did not give you thumbs up. It looks like you are trying to keep up with the Jones. Although the cooktop you had looked like a Jenn Air, of which I grilled many steaks and burgers on, it was electric so I don't blame you on buying the gas unit. As far as the cabinets go...why toss out the beautiful stained wood cabinets for painted ones? Somebody got a good deal when they removed them! As for the counter tops, the granite is too expensive and too porous. It looks like you went with ceramic tile floors. Wait till you have to clean the grout. Of course, it looks like you people have plenty of money, so none of what I said even matters. I would post my kitchen update but it is much too conservative. I think I joined the wrong site.

lbussing - I have had granite and grout for over 10 years in my last kitchen. I've never had a problem with either. Sorry you feel you are on the wrong site. I am sure your kitchen is beautiful as well. I am an avid cook and the kitchen is very important to me. I made it the way I wanted and am very happy with the end product. The answer to your cabinet question - we knocked out a wall, making the kitchen bigger and had to add cabinets, thus going with all new so they would match. Have a blessed day!

csacco, lovely kitchen! I don't know if you chose your grout color specifically but I have a suggestion. I just had the whole house retiled and because we were working over the phone, the wrong grout was used. So I stained it a different color. It was a pain to do myself, but there are companies who stain grout as well. I was really annoyed because the tile I chose was the wood look and why oh why would anyone thing a light grout would make it resemble a wood floor? It was your tile pattern that made me think of it and now at the end of my long story, here are the before and after pics.

The pictures here were put up by a reader, just like you. You must be very young. Almost no matter where you go, there are people smarter, richer, thinner and better looking than every one of us. Most of us also understand the pros and cons of the materials we choose. You were rude and insulting in assuming she was ignorant, while you had the facts. You know nothing about why she made her choices. Slamming her choices because it is not what you can afford will only make you bitter in the end.

Franky, a gut remodel of a kitchen for 40k is way cheaper than I would have expected since I also have a 30 year old kitchen and have been trying to drag it into the 21st century at a price I can afford and no, I won't be spending 40k either. But, I would if I could because I am not going to get exactly what I want when I have half that to spend. And my choices are not about 'keeping up with the Joneses.' It's about having the things that work best for the way I use my kitchen and the space I have to put it in.

In my househunting quest, I've taken note of a few things that people need to know if they are planning to sell their home down the road. If you paint your cabinets, please make sure they're done as professionally as possible. I've seen too many cabinets where they didn't (for instance) bother removing the doors and painted over the hinges which now have paint rubbing off and look terrible. In addition, if you paint your cabinets white/off-white/very light, you may want to consider using pulls or knobs, which make them look more finished. I'm looking for somewhat of a fixer (good bones, needs love and makeup), and while I like painted cabinets, they must look good (like the ones in the photos here!) or I will either pass or plan on a gut. By the way, if the cabinets in my new home are great, I will not hesitate to paint them - but I've decided that I will definitely use a pro. I know my limitations of patience and what I'm not willing to learn!

Spencerh - I wanted a darker grout, more gray to match the tile, but there was a mix-up at the store and we got the wrong one :( I figure if that was the only thing that went wrong, I am OK with it. I did not know you could darken the grout, so I will probably do this! Thank you for the idea!

Lets talk cost in investment. That kitchen is only 10 years old and looks as dated as the original that was 20+ years old. Sadly the door profile was not substantially changed. As it turns out that would have taken this remodel into 2030. The value comes in having done it so the poster had time to enjoy their choices.
