I have an ipe deck and I don't think you have to do anything unless you want it to retain the red color. A lot of people want it to turn grey. I like the red so we used ipe oil. Another brand is messemers (sp?).

On our Ipe, Messmer's and Ipe Oil have worked very well. There are other brands like Penofin that do oils for hardwoods like Ipe. The important thing to keep in mind is that it needs to have a UV inhibitor in the oil.

One last thing to mention, Ipe doesn't need to be sealed or waterproofed. It's density is more than enough. The oil is to retain the beautiful color it has naturally.

Have used Ipe Oil purchased from Advantage Lumber. Make sure that you apply it lightly because it will not soak in well ( due to the density of Ipe). Wipe off excess.
