Which rooms should be painted the same color

I am having the hardest time figuring out which of the rooms on our first floor should be painted the same color. We are first time home buyers, so I'm unsure of the "rules" for painting multiple rooms on one level.
When you walk into our home, the dining room is on the right and the living room is on the left. You can see straight through the short hallway to the family room.
It is only when you are in the family room (with fireplace) that you can see the kitchen, which leads to the laundry/mud room. From the family room you can also see the living and dining rooms.
Please help!
