I have no idea, but as an accountant, I try to factor into my decisions ALL the costs involved in something. For example, if you sell and buy a new home, how much will that increase your mortgage payment? Will you be farther from work so commuting costs are more? Will you need to buy new furniture for a larger home? How much will it cost you to get your current house ready to sell? Would you feel obligated to upgrade the kitchen hoping to get a higher price? Will you get enough out of the sale for a nice down payment on a new home? You get the drift......

You also need to be honest with yourself about whether you can afford to move, and if you want to move. Unless you're independently wealthy, don't assume you're going to find the perfect home that you won't find things that need to be done.

If you live in a decent neighborhood, there's a lot to be said for staying in your home, paying down your mortgage, and getting to a point it's paid off and you can live comfortably. We're almost there, and I'm counting the months till our home is paid for.

There's updates and there's updates. You might want to look at MLS photos of houses in your area to see what typical updates have been done. Cosmetic changes such as new flooring and wallpaper are worthwhile for many homeowners. Maintenance items such as new paint and new roof are just things you have to do when they are worn out.

All great advice. I would find out current value of house compared to others in same neighborhood. Keep in mind that kitchen remodels usually give you a good return on investment and if you otherwise love your home, go for it.
