Is this rug too light for the room?

Just had the Catherine rug from Ballard Designs delivered and the colors match but I'm worried that the rug is too light/neutral for the room. The walls are BM's Wythe Blue and I love the color, and the drapes are what I had in our old house so they were a matter of convenience when I first put them up but now I like the touch of warmth. I'm afraid that they stand out now that the rug is so light, but I don't want to make the room completely cool tones. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks! (I realize I need art over the fireplace, I haven't found the right piece yet).

      I'd love to see the richer colors of a more traditional oriental but it is pretty and you can get that feel from a throw, pillows, etc. you have a lot of room to play with color/pattern-wise, so use it!!

      I worry that I need a rug with more contrast. It's part of their Ballard at Home collection, so I can return it within 30 days for free. I'll hold onto the return packaging and shipping label, just in case.

      @jennlettswatson - that's what I'd really prefer, a traditional oriental, along the lines of this rug. Sadly, it's $1300, which is 3 times what I paid for the Catherine rug!

      Let's see...if my math is working?? You may end up spending more than the extra $800 for the rug that you truly love($1300 one in above pic) trying to make the Catherine rug look more richer with pillows and other accents, changing drapes, etc. In the long run, you may be happier with spending the extra money for the rug you truly love and every time you walk in the room you will purr;))

      @Margo, you're exactly right, and that's why my mantel is bare after living in the house for 20 months - I'm not going to just buy something to fill the space. Yes, the Catherine rug matches and yes, it was a good price, but...it's bland. I need some color in the rug to tie in the drapes and balance the pale walls, especially since I don't want to buy new drapes or repaint the walls. The rug is going back! I'm happy and sad, both!

      Don't get me wrong, I like the Catherine rug, but I can just feel the reluctance in your post. When you find the exact rug you love, you will know it, and probably not feel the need to ask. You will just show and tell it;))

      Fall in love with a rug and then make it work with your neutral sofa by bringing the colors in it up in pillows, art and accessories.

      Exactly! I thought maybe I just needed to get used to it because the rug that used to be in there had bright colors, but I know that that rug isn't right for that room. It would look pretty good in the dining room, but my husband is anti-rug for the dining room (but what does he know? haha). At least the return shipping is free!

      Measure and try the rug in the dining room before you return it. Should be 4' wider and longer than the dining table top to work, so you can measure before you bother to move it.

      Posting an update - after looking on craigslist, I found this awesome Bidjar Persian rug! It was actually less than the Ballard rug - which is going back tomorrow. I am thrilled!!!

      Margo - yes, exactly! I worried that it would clash because there is every color in that rug, but I am in love with it! It's 20 years old and looks brand new. Definitely worth taking a two hour lunch yesterday!

      I'm kicking myself for not buying the rust sari silk pillows at World Market on Black Friday, they were buy one, get one free! I knew I should have gotten them but my daughter talked me out of it. I'll keep checking their site, maybe they'll go on sale again, or I could pull out the fabric I bought last year and sew them.

      Hi---beautiful rug! The room is quite dark and cold looking (sorry)---I think there are too many blue undertones and too little of contrast in light/dark value. For these reasons, I recommend painting the walls a warmer hue. It will change the look and feel of the room considerably. Check out SW's Roycroft Vellum, Kilim Beige and Nomadic Desert. If you want blue somewhere, the ceiling could be painted a very pale blue/green hue. Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

      Really? I don't think it looks cold at all. It looked much colder with the first rug. I've painted the ceiling of the kitchen (adjacent to the living room) blue, and wouldn't want to paint that ceiling blue too. The rest of my house is painted in shades of warm gray (SW Useful Gray, SW Galveston Gray) and I'm not sure how throwing beige in the mix would look. I'm going to live with it for awhile and see how it feels.

      flwr, your new Persian is a keeper. Your instincts were correct....and what a buy! :) Your coffee table was looking a little small and now because of the pattern in the Bidjar, it's perfect.

      I love the rug you have in the second picture - the first one was nice too but you'd have to have different drapes for that one. The second one on the other hand gives the room a jolt and brings it to love incorporating the wall color and the drapes - great choice - now you can pick colors from the rug for pillows, throws and accessories

      My rule is to buy the painting or the rug and then build the room either of those - for wall colors, pillows & accessories, etc.
