The two wall sconces that are currently on either side of the window, opposite the entry are operated by the wall switch by the door. I'm having both removed, replacing the one over the desk with the Boston library task light, and am thinking of this picture light for the right side of the window. Both are hard wired, but have switches on the lamp itself, so could be turned on with the wall switch, but then either one or the other could be turned off if desired. They are both dimmable. Both are same designer, and manufacturer, so although different, still similar enough and same finish.

I'm thinking that a gallery of art above the TV would be distracting if you were watching the TV, especially if there are gallery lights on the pictures.

The TV will be the only picture on the wall that talks and moves.

Gypsy, The only piece of art that will be lit is whatever I hang to the right of the window. I ordered the vodka print on canvas, as it was very discounted due to the holidays. Will see how it looks on that wall.

Holding off on any other art until the TV is mounted, as well as the live edge shelf. Contractor is working here this week converting a large 3/4 bath to a laundry/powder room, so I'm hopeful he will have time to mount the shelf and TV, as well as doing the wiring for the task light and picture light.Will have to see how a gallery looks around the TV once it is up. Most often watch movies at night, so the art would not be distracting in a darkened room. Will see...

You are one busy lady...this room seems to be flying through so far. I was reading Carolyn's post as if the pictures above the TV would be gallery lit when you turned on the light to the room, and thought that would be distracting even if dimmed.

The house needed a lot of reno, as it was built in the early 90's and looked it! We did new flooring and fixtures throughout, new kitchen and master bath before we moved in; as well as removed two or three types of wallpaper from every room and painted throughout.

There is a mud room off the kitchen, with a 9.5' x 8' 3/4 bath and a 9.5' x 11.5' laundry room beyond. We decided we wanted to have a workout room after all of the decadent dining in Europe, so are removing the stall shower in the bathroom and putting laundry in there, which gave us room enough in the former laundry room for a universal gym and treadmill. Much better use of space for us. There was enough of the white oak flooring left to do the gym floor.

I've lost 15 pounds already since the gym equipment was put in 6 weeks ago!

Not sure why there was a shower in the powder room off the kitchen/mudroom. I'm a messy cook, but not generally messy enough to require a shower!

Perhaps the builder thought you'd be stomping through mud puddles when it rains :)

I've been gathering artwork together, but can't hang anything until the shelf is up and the television is hung on the wall. Contractor had a busy week here last week tying up loose ends in many rooms. He removed the sconces in here and mounted the picture light and task light for the desk. (Still need to texture and paint the patches today.

I have a 4 foot section of the slab left over from the desk. The television will be wall mounted and I originally thought I wanted to do a floating slab shelf under it, about 10" deep. I'm now thinking that since I have enough material, it might look better to do two shelves, one on either side of the television, mounted about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the television. There is 48" of wall space on either side of the television. The printer is being located to the inside of the closet once the electrical outlet is installed.

I could then do a combination of sculptural and framed art on and above the shelves. This would leave the entire desk surface open as a work area.

Thoughts??? Need to decide today.

Will you be able to lift the printer lid with the shelf in place? I like the shelf idea if this is not a problem.

I can, but the printer is actually going to be on a printer stand in the closet once Jared puts an outlet in there. It is wireless, so does not have to be connected to the computer.

The television is 38" wide and I have 50" of wall space on either side. Does 42" work for the shelf length, leaving 4" on tv and wall ends?

The vodka tonic picture is a little too low, Deborah. It should be hung so the top is no more than 2" below the light, so the light will shine on the art.

Forgot that you were working on this room, too. Has to feel soooo good to have this progress done! LOVE the shelf idea and that you have material left over to use so there will be a cohesive look.

Hope it is easy enough to move the pic up the way Nancy suggested.

Thanks Nancy. It is just propped up on the television mount box, which was the tallest thing I had to see how it looked with the chairs and lamps. I'll make sure I hang it just below the light when the wall is done, which will put the bottom of the print right about the height of the chair back. Maybe a smidgeon lower...

Thanks all. Shelves are cut and I'm off to get wood sealer and matte varnish so that I can sand them down and get at least one coat of varnish on before they are mounted this afternoon. He is mounting them with all thread, so they will be floating with no brackets. Excited to get mementos from our travels out of closets and have them on display!

Ah, silly me, you had already said it would be in the closet but I could only believe what was in front of my eyes. Instead of varnish you could use Bona Traffic to seal the shelves.

Too late... Computer was down while Jared was working in the office. Already have a coat of wood sealer on.

The shelf by your light could be placed higher than the one on the other side, that way you won't have shadow over your computer screen and it will have a lighter, airier feel like driftwood rather than so structured.....what do you think?

That is a great idea Gypsy, unfortunately the mounting posts are already installed. I think it will be ok though, as the shelf is only 10 inches deep and the computer screen is just barely under the edge. The library light is well outside the shelf, so shouldn't cast a shadow. We'll see tomorrow...

Yes it is. I heard pounding and ran to the office. He forgot that I wanted to sand down and varnish the shelves before install. Took a crow bar and both of us to get the shelf off the wall. Plus a little more wall patching... Luckily he only had one installed! He's still here, spraying texture on all of the patches where intercoms and sconces were removed. Still has to get the laundry/powder room mirror and sconces installed, but we are getting very, very close.

Also just got a call that the fireplace doors are finished for the living room and the fabricator is installing them tomorrow morning. It is a flurry of activity around here.

I think we'll go out for dinner!

I think it's all good except the window looks very odd to me, I'd like to see the wood painted white and add a wider trim around it. It screams " different and out of place" to me

Four more days and you will see little Sherman! Shelves are varnished. Just need to let them dry before mounting. I got a new sander that catches most of the sanding dust, so I should be able to sand and varnish the desk top in place. Good news since it weighs over 300 pounds and we had to bring it in through the window!

You'll have to pose lil Sherman in each of your room photo updates...I am excited for you, you'd think I was getting another puppy :)

I could do before and after for each room and have Sherman in the afters...

Sneak peek... They are just sitting on top of the all thread while the varnish dries, so will be a couple of inches lower when mounted. Cords will be enclosed in a cord cover painted the same color as the wall.

Just a comment about the chair - such Star Wars look!!! I think you're going to love your room. It's great.

You may need another chair...my pup has his own chair and lays there and watches me at the computer...he insists on being close enough to see the screen. If I move the chair too far he will jump up on my lap, then he wants to help me type.

Cody loves the ottoman. I move it over next to me and he naps while I work. Big enough for both of them for a few months...
