why do you need shades?

Shades are only needed for a bit of privacy. Otherwise, you can stand on our street and look directly into the house.

I would not cover the side windows

I second the film. There are frosted cling varieties available, easy on, easy off, and they let light in, but people can't see into your house. Have some up for about 10 years now.

Would it look good for film except on the door, fabric? I bought magnetized rods once and that worked..

I also like the idea of film...much more simple. Possibly pick a pattern that is similar to the delia shades you like, or have a custom fretwork panel built for the lites.

If you must have privacy then etch or film both the side lights and door windows. Please no pleated shades! Better yet - Build a private fence or hedge and gate beyond the front door to create an inviting entry courtyard.

you could change the glass. I have a similar front door, but the glass is opaque with a simple design

I had frosted window film put on my windows at the front door and I loved this; very clean lines and light still came in, though not as much. People would come to the door, ring the bell, and look in. My films were not going to come off easily. Some hardware for doors is magnetic.
