When we bought this 1947 ranch there was a huge round tabletop perched atop a brick pedestal in this room, that actually went through the floor to the ground where it was originally built. Hence we have always called this room, "The Table Room." My hubby cut the brick pedestal out and put it in the yard under a birdbath (it was pink brick.)
The outer wall includes this large round alcove, into which I have built a semi-circular bed. The mattress is not on it right now, just have a pink bedspread thrown over the plywood. I am going to make a foam backrest that is to run all around the curve. We use this nook to sit and read, play cards, that sort of thing. When my away-at-college daughter comes home, this is her room. So she sleeps there. You have to walk through this room to get to my last daughter's bedroom. And we use it to store stuff in those cabinets. But as far as using it, it is a sometimes-bedroom for adult-children who don't live here full-time. In the future, it will be a playroom and bedroom for grandchildren who come spend the summer. (We live on a 3.6 acres of sand and boulders.)
Yes, there are two windows in this room that lead into the library (about which I got great advice from HOUZZ last summer). The tall bookshelf is covering one of them. My daughter prefers to have those windows covered because the light bothers her at night.
Great huge storage cabinets behind those panel doors! they are about 3' deep. On the far left of the whole-wall-of-cabinets, there is a window-opening that goes through to the kitchen. So yes, you can enter this room from all 4 sides (3 from other rooms in the house, one from outside.)
Yes, we are going to replace the ceiling. Waiting for the contractor to get to us.
These I would like to keep: the fake Tiffany ceiling fixture, the red table lamp, the old wardrobe cabinet, and the two bookshelves. If any one can find a way for the rug to work in here, I would like to use it, it's a great Karastan wool rug.
I would just love to know of any great ideas to make this room cheerful and fun. We we have kept the '47 style of the house as much as possible, without trying to go time-capsule. Paint on common areas of our house are Dunn Edwards Fizzle (a light blue, library), and Cottontail, (a light yellow) throughout the greatroom/kitchen/halls. The bedroom next door to this is two-tone blue and green. I need some fabric for the bedspread and back cushions on the bed, paint for the paneling and furniture, and any other thoughts.
