I love taking it up around the windows. Do you have enough tile? Your kitchen will be fabulous. Are you planning to put up a window covering? Roman shades in a colorful print will be great & keep the fabric away from the sink. If planning roman shades it would work w/o backsplash all the way, but maybe 1/2 way up the wall. You could add light sconces on the sides of the cabinets or a pendant at each window. Let me know what you think.

I didn't go all the way up on mine. Have a lovely roman shade on the window. Love it!! Its a matter of personal taste.

I agree Patrick. If you put a window treatment on it, because it is so low, you would never see outside.

Definitely go to the top!

You could mount a roman shade up high, at the point where a normal window would end, and then drop it down just to the top of the window. This would still give you all the light as well as add some interest to your window. But if you prefer not to go with shades go all the way up to ceiling with tile.

Hoping to see a pic when this is finished and what you did.....did you go all the way around the window???

Going all the way around the window is a beautiful aesthetic!

That said, typically when you see tiling up to the ceiling in kitchens, the windows are taller - so the border of tile is even all around, on the sides and the top. We find that most homeowners who have much more space above their window than on the sides or below (like yours) prefer to add a valance or shade at the top for balance and keep the backsplash level across the rest of the kitchen (~18" high).

If you're dedicated to tilling up to the ceiling, adding a hanging pendant above the window might accent and balance the space very nicely! And we love the tile you've selected!

A quick note about our experience: We consistently design between 70-90 kitchens/year (for over 34 years) and have literally designed thousands of kitchens.....We also design full structural including below-grade foundation plans.....

We have 2 Chicagoland locations and a Michigan location which cover the Wisconsin to Indiana borders, N.W. Indiana and S.W. Michigan.....

Anyway, we've attached a few recent kitchens where we ran backsplash all the way up. We always opt for this when the window location allows for an enhanced visual. Your's does. We'd do it!

Either way, it is all personal taste. What it usually boils down to, if the client has the extra material and labor cost figured into their budget and if it is the look that they want.

If you stop the tile going up to the bottom of the upper cabinets, I like to add a pencil to finish the edges off.

I am noticing how even the top drawers are going across your bottom cabinets in picture with workmen. This is in reference to another poster's dilemma that I saw today.
Regarding your tile job. If it for the the two windows, I think it would look great.

Glad to see someone ask this question. Have the same situation BUT my cabinets don't go all the way to the 10" ceiling so there's a foot high space. If I go up around the window, it doesn't seem like it would look right. Should tile stop with bottom edge of cabinet on right? Haven't found any pix that show it. Thoughts?
