You already have more seating than this room can comfortably hold. Short of getting a new living room, you might replace the two sofas with a small sectional placed in the corner by the window and move the TV to the opposite wall. This will put the traffic pattern right through the middle of the room which is not desirable, but the sofa blocking the door as it does now is even less desirable.

If you do get a sectional, go for something less bulky than the sofas you have now, and something with legs. It'll make the room feel less heavy.

Opt for a small u-shaped sofa and put your TV on the opposite wall.

Hi---a small sectional is definitely the way to go. Another suggestion, paint the walls one color---it will make the room look bigger. Good Luck!

I like Natalie's choice in sectionals! The exposed legs feel less cluttered; the ottoman could serve as informal seating, as well. You mention that you have a large family. How many people live together in the home?

reverse the TV to the other side. put the two white chairs in front of the window.and small sectional on the original tv wall and coming down to separate kitchen. these sofas are too big. Try Bassett or ikea for smaller size.put wooden blinds up or shutters on window

definitely put the TV on the opposite wall. the couch there just blocks the whole flow. if you can get new sofas you might want to think of one long "slim" one with the white chairs on each end

Create a seating area by the windows with the white chairs. Putting a table & with lamp in between. Add a pillow to each chair that incorporates black & white to make the room flow. Put the sofa on the main wall and the love seat where the white chairs were.

Actually I would put the TV where the love seat is. Putting the sofa on the accent wall.

-Longgg couch against the blue wall

-TV set hanging from the wall ,across

-a bench with no back where the two white chairs are , for multi use , so that people can seat facing the living room and also the dinning room, when necessary.

    - a bookshelf underwear the window and a nice wooden chair next to it

-new window treatments that hang from the ceiling height ,so the room looks taller .

Good luck , the space will look great

suggest painting the dining area the same color as the living room to make the entire area feel larger - the way it is now separates two spaces and makes then both look even smaller

Long u shaped sectional against blue wall. Glass coffee table as to not add visual bulk. Hang flat screen directly across from blue wall. If keeping blue wall find a great coordinating graphic drape to add some patten or a patterned rug. Target has some great cheap ones. Paint that door and Definitely keep the door corridor open flowing.

You can also paint the wall including the door the same color so it disappears.

    Marhaba Ali,

It may not be a top priority, but an art piece could add a lot to the room. Here are a couple idea, but if there is something you like let me know and im happy to find more.

    Cheers,
    Ethan

we r 5 people living... yes i will definitely put my tv on the opposite wall and will paint the dinning area. also will go n buy the long couch against blue wall.. thankx everyone..
Using the furniture you already have I think you've done a good job. Lower the picture in the dining area and get new drapes hung from a rod almost to the ceiling and going to the floor.

If you want to buy new furniture be sure that it's not "overstuffed" with those big rolled arms. They take up valuable space.
If you do not want to buy anything new; place the two dark couches opposite each other, with one facing the window, back to the dining area. Place the white chairs on the wall where the tv is and put the tv on the opposite wall. All the large pieces will be to one side in a seating area. Paint all the walls a neutral. Hang pictures on the long wall by seating. But I agree that a smaller scale sectional is a much better choice.

your furniture is too bulky for the size of the room, and there's too much of it. Nothing will change if you can't either upsize your living space or downsize your furniture. Even if you have a big family, how often do all of you really sit together in that room? I can't imagine more than four people feeling comfortable in there at one time. it would feel way too crowded and claustrophobic for me.

The problem is that the furniture that you have is way off scale to the size of the room. And the layout makes the furniture seem larger and the room seem smaller.

I'd definitely suggest getting either a small sectional as others have advised. Or a long sofa on the accent wall with the two white chairs (or even smaller slipper chairs) opposite each other (one against the window and one against the dining room).

The only other option is if you have to keep the existing couches I'd put them both side by side against the blue wall (hopefully they'll fit together on that wall), and get light colored (possibly light green) slipcovers for the sofas and, again, put the white chairs opposite each other on the window wall and against the dining room. In any of these layouts, the TV needs to go on the entry wall. Best of luck!

I'd suggest paint first. You've got a nice tan/beige in the pillow and it looks like it's in the carpet, too. Paint the area where the table is that nice color. That area should be darker than the surrounding area. The blue is gorgeous but it overwhelms the rest of the room. Find an off white to match the floor. The suggestion to make the drapes go to the ceiling is great and I suspect you can find a couple of sheets on sale in a light cream if you can't find drapes right away. That out of the way, move the sofas to opposite ends of the living room so that they face each other. You have little persons, so I'm wondering if you could find a couple of large floor pillows for them to sit on. As suggested, move the tv to the entry side of the room. That leaves the two white chairs. I'm wondering what they would look like as a sort of banquette against the far wall of the dining area. The one problem would be white vs food. Hmmm. Take the spare chair and put it next to the tv on the entry wall. I know exactly what it's like to come in with children and arms full and you need something handy to put stuff on. Then a few prints for the long wall and you are in business!

A round table in the dining area would make it seem bigger and it would comfortably fit your family. It would also take away from the small square feeling of the area. A glass top would also make the space less heavy. Love the idea of drapes/Curtains hung floor to ceiling on each side of the window. All walls painted the same color, perhaps taupe or grey to make it warmer with the light couches. Can the tv be hung on the wall?

    Some ideas

Too much large and oversized furniture is stealing valuable space. I would first paint the blue wall a soft neutral that matches the other walls to make the room appear larger. I would move the TV to the other wall, allowing space for a small sectional and also create a clear path from the front door to the rest of the house. Remove the cumbersome draperies and hang bamboo blinds, lined if privacy is a factor. This will also help with the illusion of more space and leave room for an end table and lamp. A gallery wall above the sectional of all those family members would be all you need for artwork. Extra seating can be accomplished through the use of the dining room chairs when you need it. You have a brown rug, blue walls and green tablecloth so choosing a color scheme will help with the flow. Eliminate the bright blue accent walls and find color in your accessories, artwork and rugs. If budget allows, a new dining room table that can be turned the sideways with a bench against the wall for seating will make the space feel less crowded and possibly seat more than four people for dinner parties. Have fun!

I didn't read the others, but I think the answer is white or pearl gray. Put a large, but small armed, "U" shaped sectional with backs, on the blue wall and a wall hung TV opposite above a 12" shallow cabinet. Doors are good for hiding toys, etc.

Measure carefully. I think you can put seats all across the blue wall, two seats on the dining side, but only one on the door side. Be certain to get a square corner unit, not rounded one, for more comfortable seating. Get a large square ottoman, on short legs, to hold balls, etc. for a quick clean up, a place for a tray of snacks and to prop up feet.

Put a small, but interesting table, at the path end of the dining side for the phone. Place everything on a gorgeous rug containing variations of blue and maybe a few other favorite colors (rosey red, gray & yellow. Put some decorative pillows, of the same colors on sofa - don't overdo it. Hang some pictures on the blue wall and something fun/interesting on the inside and outside of your door.. You may need to add a couple of very simple floor lamps for better lighting for reading.

I just went back to check the photos and I think the first one after yours by ACT I DESIGNS, is gorgeous and similar to what I had in mind except for the white, blue, gray color scheme I suggested.

I haven't read all of the comments but a lot of people seem to be saying the same things. The furniture needs to be the right scale for the room - not just the couches but the ottoman/coffee table and the TV stand. Right now with the oversized furniture and the TV stand that is so tall, it is making the room collapse in on itself.

My suggestion (which I know is similar to the others) is to have a small scale couch with a chaise against the window/accent walls. The chaise will allow the eye to keep traveling along the room where a sectional with a full arm on both ends acts like a barrier. Keeping two smaller chairs as a visual divide from the living room is good and I would recommend having a couple small ottomans instead of one big ottoman or a coffee table. By grouping them in the middle you will be able to have a nice place to put things down, but they could also act as more seating or backs rests on a movie night.

Getting a TV stand that brings the center of the TV to eye height while seated will also help the space feel bigger and will make the TV easier to watch as well.

Another thing that will make the room seem bigger is if you move the curtains up so that they are hung just under the ceiling. It will make your ceiling seem higher.

As a quick fix, using your existing furniture - I'd switch the couch with the TV and put the other couch where the two chairs are. Remove the plastic from the white chairs and try them on the window wall. Maybe also take the picture in your dining area and put it just above the couch, approximately eye level with the center of the picture - a little higher if you're short. Or if you can''t move the TV keep the couch under the window and put the other couch where the white chairs are and try the white chairs across from the TV.

I definitely agree to go with the sectional west elm has some great "small living" options. Also room and board. I think the lazyboy looking squishy sofas make the room heavy and replacing them with a sectional in a nice linen will make the room seem so much larger. Paint over that blue wall with maybe a warm grey color. Place the sectional on the wall that is blue now and having an ottoman that doubles as coffee table and seating when you need it is a great option. I would maybe get a floor lamp and a mirror above the sofa to have some extra light bouncing around. Get a console for the tv to replace the "build it yourself option" I always like to say this is your home now it's ok to get adult furniture!! :) wayfair, room and board, west elm, France & son, have good reasonably price durable options for turning your house into a home. Share some picks when you make the changes!

Change the light fixtures and drapes(ceiling to floor) paint one colour, if you want a focal wall paint it dark so the furniiure disappears. I live in a very small space and use dark focal walls so my large furniture disappears.
