I like it as long as it's not so deep you can trip over it.

This colour is not bad, but not a big fan of shag carpet.

HI -- With little grand babies around ,I think it would be a nightmare to clean !! So no ....

I was forced to live with both red and orange shag carpet in our younger and much poorer days, so I would never ever have it again, no matter how hip it might become.

I think I must have been out of the country in the years it was popular in the last century, and not having any of my 5 grandchildren living closeby, I would not worry about it now for our house, tho it is not what I would choose for us. We have a nice flat weave Soumak in our living room.

I have, however, suggested shag for several of my younger clients and love the look of it for them!

I have a shorter shag only on the stairs and in upstairs den. I love it under my bare feet and I don't mind vacuuming it either. It is a nice change from the short pile carpet.

Sunny, is it a frieze? My daughter had a frieze in her last house, it's kind of a shorter more modern version of the old shags.

I live in Michigan I don't have shag carpeting i have no carpeting at all just area rugs, but i sure would love it in all the rooms in my house with the exception of the kitchen and bathroom

Two dogs - too much hair. Shag carpeting is not for my house although I do not mind the looks of it.

The look doesn't bother me but the crumb-catcher quality is a no-go.

I love shag! I actually like that it catches all the dog hair and crumbs without showing them, then I can vacuum them up. I switched to a very low pile rug, and I can see everything on the surface. I'll be switching back to shag soon. Plus, don't they just have a cozier feel?

I like the look of long shag carpets as shown in the picture but I would never own one for two reasons, one it would not go with our decor and two It would never feel clean to me, but then again I am such a clean freak :)

I cleaned a house in the 70's with long blue and green shag carpet that I had to rake. It turned me off of shag carpet forever I think!

How does one clean a shag rug properly? Having children rules them out for me from a mental standpoint on cleanliness (or lack thereof). They do look nice in pictures though.

As an area rug, it's nice....wall-to-wall carpeting no!

I'm doing a lot of shag area rugs with modern and contemporary furnishings. It warms up the room and adds another texture. I love it....

they collect a lot of random stuff that you mostly later find in your or some one elses childs mouth. i.e small (OPEN I MIGHT ADD) safety pin. that happened just 3 weeks ago to my freind.
but yes....they are very nice and cute and cozy. but def. not too long shags.!

Just got one in my living room which doesn't get a lot of foot traffic.. It looks really pretty and warms up the room! That being said, I don't think I'd ever get one in my family room though ;)

I like the one shown. Looks comfy, esp. when barefoot. More for a one person house. Can't imagine one with children or pets.

No, No No. Hard to clean, traps allergens and so dated.

This room calls for it. With the strong lines, geometric shape of the room, furniture, and everything else, the shag carpet brings some different texture, depth, and softness to the room making it homey rather than office- type without having to add too much color. It works for me from a design standpoint.

I love the texture it adds. I actually found a leather one on houzz. I really like it, but I wonder how hard it would be to keep clean.... although we don't wear shoes in the house, that helps. :)

I only like it as a rug and only if you don't have kids and animals and can keep it clean!!!! I personally have both so it's a no no for me.

Area rug

I experienced shag carpet growing up and all I can say is what a major dirt collector. Unless you picked them up and took them outside to beat them clean, the vacuum certainly wasn't going to get the dirt out. Plus, if you wore any type of higher heel on your shoes you were sure to trip by getting inadvertently tangled with the "cute shag". Imagine that with a baby in your arms. No thanks. Sometimes function wins out over appearances.

No, no, no. Had some short to medium length shag once. Truly could not vacuum all the dirt out of it. If you parted the shag to get to the bottom there were all kinds of dirt at the bottom.

I don't even understand why shag rug is even an option again! It holds more dirt than the lower pile rugs and it would be a nightmare for anyone with allergies! jmo

I find shag carpet looks 'dirty' and unkempt. Even if you just finished vacuuming it still looks messy. It brings down everything in the room.

A transitional rug would work well in this contemporary space. I love the texture that shag carpeting gives. It comes is many lengths, colors and materials.
As in all design choices, there is a place for any carpet styles in rooms, tastes, lifestyles and design styles where it is appropriate and works very nicely.

I like it ok in area rugs, but not wall to wall. It would get too dirty if in the traffic area of my house.

I had a Tuftex Pet polyester shag in a rich red brown called bordeaux. I loved it so much for our bedroom that I wanted to buy it for our new home. They've discontinued it! I can't find anything even close!

A family member has a carpet like it, but was always wondering what was the best way to clean it for them, then recently I saw a TV program where the lady showed how to look after it, you have to first shake it outdoors to get rid of any dust and then with a flexible garden rake, just comb through it to make it straight.. great idea I thought!!

I think a shag rug looks nice, as long as it's in someone's else's house. (Looks good in this picture.). For me, it's a NO. I like low pile, so much easier to walk on when transitioning from the hardwood floor, and easier cleaning. Also think a fluffy rug would lose its appeal when it's matted down, from being walked on a lot. For those who love them, go for it!

I don’t think I would have one now but I
love them. They bring back childhood memories for me because my parents had a
flaming orange one in the living room. It was soft and cuddly. Once we found a
tiny abandoned nest that had fallen out of a nearby tree and it was luxuriously
lined with orange fuzz. – So, realizing we were not the only ones who loved the
orange shag, my mother took to leaving the balls of fuzz that came out when she
brushed the carpet out on the doorstep for the wild canaries to collect - and they
did. After a while they took to hopping in through the open landing door to
collect directly from the carpet themselves – feisty little things – much to
our Mother’s dismay and us kids’ delight. I think I will always have a soft
spot for shags.

No. It would always seem dirty to me. I like hard floors that are tile or wood. For area rugs, I favor jute or something low that can be easily cleaned. Just the thought of carpet mites makes me itchy.

In a small area rug that will fit in my extra large washing machine, might be ok to put near a bed or bathtub.

Not for me. We see this more and more but I think it will go out of style fairly quickly.

Not good if you have pets - tough to clean stains. We put a large shag rug in our guest bedroom (cream) and it adds a lot of comfort to the room - but no pets there.

Have got some new thick carpets which are high-pile what vacuum would you suggest? my hoover is struggling to manage it at the moment. Have been told that this type is the right one to use on shag or high pile carpet soniclean sfc-7000 any help on what you use. thanks
