Changing my husbands bathroom!! I can't stand it!!

We are starting on what will hopefully eventually be a full house redo. Mostly paint and furniture, but we'd like to remodel the kitchen and bathrooms eventually. We decided to start simple (cheapest too) with 2 rooms we barely use. By the end of Jan we hope to be using our newly created home office and game room.

My plans are to hopefully find a new home. My husband is losing his job and we don't know where we're going to go...

My husband mentioned building a tea house out in our woods. It would be small, primitive, no electricity and on the cheap but nice. Any ideas out there?

Build a new house with a wonderful view on back of the house. I am locking for a plan with living and dining on back of the house with big windows

Planning on refinishing our hardwoods in the living room, dining room and hallway. Possibly carpeting the three bedrooms!

I'm planning on working on our two bathrooms. Little by little. Also, we have contracted to have the carpeting in the guest room removed and hardwood put down. Yea!! I would love to change the ceramic tile floors but now I'm dreaming.........Outside we will continue our landscaping. Almost done!

We are planning alot of renos to our rambling rancher. We will be eliminating our galley kitchen and creating a new open concept living room/ kitchen where our great room/bar area is now, while removing a small bathroom and furnace room to create a windowed kitchen banquette (to the right of the kitchen). We are turning our old kitchen into a pantry area plus a laundry area and moving the furnace/water heater to the same area. Also adding a small powder room to the area - all sectioned off of course. And if that isn't enough we are adding two bedrooms plus a bath above the garage, which entails beefing up the roof supports -adding new peaks and heightening our entranceway porch to even out the added roof elevation above the garage. Adding some external columns to the garage to bump up the living space and then redoing the whole roof.

In 2014, we reconfigured and added a master bath and bedroom that we love. In 2015, we need new exterior doors and lighting plus new front yard "drought tolerant" landscaping in No. California. Should be fun, starting my idea books.

for those doing drought tolerant landscape, I'll pass along some lessons I learned. I hired a landscaper to redo a 1950s bluegrass-heavy yard in Idaho. He was a very experience professional landscaper who is a real artist, but he really didn't know diddly about xeroscaping, but at that time there was no one in Boise who did. I had researched low-water plants I wanted, but he mixed in others that were lovely but needed more water, so I have to water for the higher demand plants. But the big irritant is he insisted it wasn't necessary to put a weed barrier under the stone mulch, even tho I thought we should do it. He was WRONG! Within 2 years I had such a bad weed problem, despite my constant hand weeding, that I was forced to spray frequently because pulling wouldn't deal with them. Bottom line is that in xeroscape there is no grass to out-complete the weeds. After 5 years of battling weeds, I had all the gravel raked back and weed barrier put down. When we pulled back the gravel I learned of 2 other install problems. First, he used a small gravel. Looked very pretty, but I've been told since by more knowledgeable people that small (pea and slightly larger) stone will not do a good job of keeping weeds from growing. he also didn't do a thick enough gravel mulch to defeat weeds. I also found that he'd used a pre-made drip system that had a drip line coming out at set intervals of about 3 feet along the whole line. I'd assumed he was putting in drips only where I had plants because I was doing a very sparse planting design. So was wasting water, and in reality I was creating a moist bed encouraging the growth of all those weeds. So lessons learned: hire a specialist in low water landscapes; put down weed barrier even if the "expert" says it isn't necessary; and specify they must create a drip system with lines custom created for your planting design, even if it costs a little bit more in labor up front.

Enamel and paint guest bedroom. Start framing lower family room, which also means getting HVAC, and electrical done at the same time. Heating the garage, and putting in a double sink for my hubby to clean out his stuff, and I will have garden cleaning to do. Oh, busy 2015, plus run our painting business.

My home project for 2015 is complete installing wood floor in kitchen and half bath, as in the living, dining, and bedroom.

Great plans to add a versa lift to out attic and add storage there, and convert our carport to a garage.

After nearly a year of planning, we hope to start our custom build in the next few weeks. If things go well, we could be done by the end of 2015. My wife and I have logged quite a few hours on Houzz, which I hope will serve us well once we have to start making a zillion decisions. We're doing a 2500 sq ft 3/3.5 house with 300 sq ft screened patio, detached garage with 500 sq ft garage apartment that will serve as our music room and guest quarters. Excited to get started!

We will move into a brand new home that has been 5 years in the making and under construction since April 2014. We are super excited as we have planned the design and features of the home for several years and also because we have a new edition coming to our family. So planning a nursery as well. 2015 is going to be an amazing year!!!

I would love to redo 2 bathrooms in my house- the master and the other full size bathroom for my son and granddaughter. This is my goal for the next few years.

What's the most important part of building a home?

A realistic budget.

Building! First time. Found our architect on Houzz - Genesis Architecture. So excited - need ideas for low cost high quality decor and building options. Looking to add a pool too, need to learn a lot about that. 2015 should be great!

We installed french doors in our family room this past fall, and in 2015 we plan to build a deck next to the family room, leading down to where we will re-position our barrel sauna. Nothing feels better on a Canadian winter night than rolling naked in the snow right out of the sauna!

Buy some windows to enhance the view. Paint, paint and more paint.

in response to nsal318's question, I'd add "and sticking to it" to Maltby Design's excellent advice. I'd also add my mother's statement I heard so often as a child: that "want" and "need" are not the same thing.

We are installing a sprinkler system. We are also removing the carpets from all the bedrooms and replacing them with hardwood flooring. Good luck to everyone with their plans and with the execution of their projects!

Finally getting around to the basement remodel. It's the last project of a two year renovation of our townhome. The basement will do heavy duty entertainment, wet bar, exercise space with sauna and bedroom and bath. Excited!

Building a new house starting in Feb. 2015! Yay, can't wait :)

Need help designing contemporary kitchen

After 21 years of living in the same house, I have just moved into a townhouse. The walls and carpets are all cream throughout the entire house.This year I just want to make it feel like home. I have been here for three weeks and somehow still feel like I am staying in a nice hotel. My first project will be updating a main floor powder room. I will wallpaper a damask print on the walls and install a new vanity with a marble or quartz countertop. I will finish it off with a mirror that makes a statement. The room is small, so this should be a manageable project.

We live in South Africa, in a 100 and something year old Victorian style house. We've been living in this house for 11 years, doing projects every year. Here are some photos from our outside wall paint job. We decided to go grey and white. But need some colour now! Still have to paint the pots and wooden bench in front of the lounge window. What colour do you think? Dark grey, white, red or yellow?

@Joe Robson and anyone else about to build...make sure you check your State Contractor's Board regarding your Builder. Also, make your decisions and DON'T change your mind (much). Change orders get costly. I am moving into my new home in 3 weeks -- it's been a long time coming, although the actual build only started the end of July. Congratulations!

Looking forward to soon gutting this kitchen (dated mid '90s). Very awkward, low hanging cupboards are horrible...my idea is to replace the long cabinet under the cupboards with a functional island...I'd like a gas range island, with perhaps bar height seating for 4, and a wall oven microwave. Not sure what to do with the space in front of the window. Ideas, suggestions welcome! :)

LAST year (well, OK the end of 2013), we downsized permanently from 3000+sf house, pool, guest house to 1100 sf 3 br condo built in 1983 that had never been upgraded. SUCH a wonderful change! Downsizing is so good for the soul...makes you realize that it's more important to have "experiences" than "things" (and that there IS a life after yardwork!). Gutted the condo (to the studs, baby!), and made it OUR "last dream house". so this year, my intent is to do absolutely NOTHING ! except put my feet up and enjoy the fruits of past labors.

i thought i was taking the year off after a late 2014 kitchen redo, turns out i'm calling contractors for a master bath renovation. doing my bit to fuel the economy.

Stick a fork in this one! Love the airy feeling of the new one...we're ready to move in....it was quite a project, working with the rules and regs of the Florida Keys, but "we got 'er done!" New kitchen table and island stools on order...wait, did I say "done" ?? It's never done!

We are simply going to paint the inside of our garage - the walls only. We did a lot of other painting throughout the house this year, put in a sidewalk, built a stone wall, replaced all the mulch with stone and finished the front steps, so we've crossed everything off our list, except painting the garage.
