my first impression is this. WOW that is SO dark! The wood furniture dark,dark wood floors, draperies dark and the walls of course. It is screaming for light and reflective surfaces in my opinion. It needs contrast. I feel the rug should be light colored, and have a pattern , a large scale one that doesn't fight with the stripe.. using those existing colors and perhaps a pop of another color, such as blue for example.Then i would keep the chairs light, ivory.. can be a slipcovered look, very elegant. No more dark wood here. Perhaps consider adding an ivory runner on top of your buffet to lighten that up and bring in more contrast. I don't imagine you are shopping for a new table but a mirrored top would be amazing here.The dark wood everywhere is very overwhelming.

I think a small scale slip covered wingback chair in natural, indigo or black, might suit your space, have a look at this example from Restoration Hardware. The color will depend on the amount of drama you'd like to create, in which case I'd be tempted to go dark. I'm sure you'll receive some other great suggestions from the Houzz community! Good luck!

I agree that the room is very dark now. I think using your table now and adding lighter chairs and maybe lightening the walls could help the room look amazing!

Love this room, you have created a lot of drama! A piece of mirrored furniture would look wonderful in this room. I agree with light chairs, the lighter the better, They need to have high backs and be rectangular in shape to keep the drama factor going, they should be upholstered in a soft, velvety fabric. Unless you have to have carpet underneath consider not, it is hard to move chairs back and forth over carpet. I would love to see a huge cut crystal vase of all white flowers on the table. Consider a mirror on the pier wall. If you introduce a color (can't see dishes may be color in there that you could pick out) consider something like a light teal blue or burnt orange or red-purple (something unexpected and high contrast) Wow! Love to see such boldness!

HI -- This is an amazing room . Yes, it is dark and now you have to add light things like everyone has said . I like the chair ideas of cream seat covers and two dramatic host chairs - something stately. I like the host chairs to have an interesting pattern fabric on the backs for interest . If you do your upholstery in," out door fabrics", then they won't be harmed with food stains . The fabrics look amazing and are easy to clean. But most of all I think you need to paint the ceiling with a pearl or bronze metallic paint . Ralph Lauren has metallic paints that are perfect and have a high end sheen look. It won't look hobby shop. You could make the door look like an antique floor mirror. Have antiqued mirror applied to the door and have a large scale picture frame around for the molding and add some at the bottom of the door - don't let it scrape the floor . Leave space enough at the bottom so it clears the floor and paint the bottom bit of the door black to complete the picture. Then it will be sort of a secret door. The room is beautiful .

Great idea lefty..or wallpaper your ceiling with a reflective paper, something gold and sparkly. I did this in my last house and it looked amazing! I have Ralph Lauren paints too and they are good products.

Great ideas!! I have used several of the Ralph Lauren metallic paints in my house...The walls in the study are a gold metallic, some of the ceilings are a bronze metallic & my daughters bedroom has a silver metallic ceiling. Any suggestions on a rug??? Brand?? and size??

Use a primary color like red (bright if you dare, more muted/brick if you're shy) as your acccent color-- here are some ideas for rugs

Put a medium crystal (if ur tradit'nal) or glass (if ur modern) vase with large cream peonies or other large floweres on the table -- nice job!

I like everyone's ideas!! So many good ones...the only thing I would say is that I don't know if it's the picture but the curtains aren't doing anything for the room, because they are so dark. If you could get lighter curtains too, to contrast against the dark walls, maybe a cream too. Curtains can add so much to a room...these dark curtains just aren't doing anything...love the chandelier and the floor!!

HI -- I think the table center piece could be a large footed shallow asian style bowl with several white orchids. I love the red rugs ,the top right and my fav is the bottom left. I think the drapes could be lightened up by having a wide satin border in ivory all around the edge and along the hem. I know there are lights but adding a couple of elegant floor lamps for the corners would add to the room. Don't froget to have the lighting on dimmers. I think everyone has had such great ideas for this room . Great job everyone !

Think about adding mirrors in the back of the china cabinets- It would help bounce the light around.

Is there a way to widen the drapes so that when opened, more of the natural light can come into the room? I looked through your idea book and I see you have some pics of dining rooms with black walls and I liked the pics.

In both of those pics however, there was a fair amount of natural light to help balance out the black.

With your dramatic room nothing says "Wow" to me quite like chartreuse! Paint the door in high glass chartreuse, same on ceiling dome, same on chairs....whatever chair you like, upholster it in chartreuse leather or fabric. Very chic and elegant like your room and oh so "Wow!" Even draperies if you are changing them..... (oh the photo of the kitchen is to show how the color totally works with black!)

Oh such a glamouress room! I chose the Bacall chair for you in champagne gold, and if you had your ceiling done in the same colour, oh lala!
