Thermador vs Wolf 30" all-gas range

We are renovating our kitchen, was all set to go with the Wolf 30" all gas range and I noticed that it received a 45 out of 100 rating in Consumer Reports. Anyone have experience with Wolf or Theramdor for a few years? Are you pleased or unhappy with either as I'm not sure which to go with. And what about the value of the kitchen for a potential resale? Thanks!

It seems that the reviews on all of the ranges aren't great. My daughter has been researching the Thermador as a first time homeowner but it is a tough decision. I have a a Dacor dual fuel and love it but she wasn't interested in a Dacor. Thermador has a nice package offer now until the end of the year.

We have a 30" all gas Wolf range (four years old) and are very happy with it. My only complaint is that the starters on the burners are a little overactive, making clicking noises on all the burners when I've only turned on one, and keeping on for longer than they need to. Otherwise it has been great. But we bought the Wolf for ourselves not for resale. I can't imagine we would get much of the price back if we unexpectedly needed to sell the house.

Have you tried to service the starters to have the problem corrected? If you do a lot of baking, how is the end product? Thanks so much!
ldtannenbaum - what did you decide? I am trying to make the same decision.
Still not sure and asking around. I thought I might ask in the survey section to see if more people can provide their experiences. Once I know, I'll be getting the slide out microwave, too (which has not been reviewed by Consumer Reports)

Sorry, I missed your earlier question, idtannenbaum. We tried to service the starters soon after we bought the range, and then we couldn't replicate the problem while the service guy (no charge) was here. He poked and prodded and made sure everything was aligned, but then after he left it started up again. So we kind of gave up because it is merely an annoyance not an impediment; the clicking sound only lasts for about a minute or so. I haven't heard other Wolf owners complain about this, by the way. Baking is great. No complaints there or in any other area. Just the annoying minute of hyperactive clicking.
Thanks, Feeny! How long have you had your Wolf range? And do you have the drawer microwave, too?
We've had our Wolf range for about four years. Our microwave is a small GE, set into an open upper shelf, as we only use it for reheating. So I have no useful input on microwaves, I'm afraid.

ldtannenbaum & Constance - Did you guys decide on what you got? Any experience to share? I'm looking at the exact comparison - 30inch all gas range Wolf or thermador... I'm not reading good things about thermador service. I dont use the oven much , but the higher BTUs and the star shape burners are attractive and make sense.

But I donot know anyone who has used a Thermador.

Wolf on the other hand seems very popular and maybe a safer option.

We are going with the Wolf, but I really like the ball-bearing racks that the Thermador have so I bought a rack for the Wolf oven- it is a little extra. Went to the showrooms in NYC and I would agree that the star seems pretty nice on the Thermador, the burners look just as easy to clean and use with the Wolf. Since we are buying Sub-Zero, you do get a discount. Good luck!

i have a thermador gas cooktop, the star burners are wonderful and the 2 of the 5 that are ultralow are dreamy. this is a new cooktop, it replaced one (also thermador) that was 28 years old and still worked great.

the 3 "regular" burners can be lit with a match, so if the power is out i can still cook. yay!

idtannenbaum, what is your opinion of the Wolf range now that you have had it for a few months? I'm in the same quandary.....there is not one 30" gas range that has it all for me and reviews are so inconsistent. Ruchs, what did you decide and are you happy? All the salespeople who I talk with tell me that each manufacturer has their issues (sadly), but Wolf is most reliable. Leaning in that direction but still so unsure.

I am pretty happy with it. Really like having the stainless steel backsplash and shelf which I saw at the design center showroom (not at the dealer selling them). Also, love the ball-bearing sliding rack, which was about $150, but very worthwhile. Seems not to difficult to clean and everything works really well so far (knock on wood). Good luck!

Hi, I finally decided to go with the thermador and I love it. I haven't used the oven a lot, but the cooktop is amazing... its powerful and at 18,000 BTUs for each burner, it gets the job done very fast. With the thermador range, I did get a free Thermador dishwasher, which was nice.

Its a lovely range and cooks very well.

I had Theramdor 4' grill, griddle, 4 burner for like 3 years and it sucks to clean and never will look good after you buy it and the griddle and grill both took a while to cook on. This home I just built I put in GE artistry glass top because all I need is an on off no fancy crap and buttons and like it much better and cook way faster and better and cleans in 30 seconds not 2 hours a week.

I still cant decide either, and then mix in Bluestar too?? Yale reveiws: "Thermador is also one of our least serviced brands based on 25,000 service calls." I'm not sure the simmer on the Thermador would not make me crazy, with the constant on/off clicking? Both seem solid choices. Anyone else have thoughts? I am looking at 30" Thermador or Wolf, but I really like the open burners of the Bluestar??? I have researched these online threads for days...

Still really liking the Wolf 30" stove. Last night I went to clean up a nasty spill and figured I'd need to spend some time on it but it was simple and very quick to clean up. Also I've been using the oven more and when I needed to cook a chicken recipe at 450 degrees, there was no smoke or any problem, and everything has come out well. There was a problem with the hinges needing to be replaced right before Thanksgiving, but the service guy came right away and replaced them. Also, the service guy gave us a short tutorial on our Sub-Zero maintenance, and he changed the direction of the vents above the stove which were all installed the wrong way. I think the hinge problem was from the installation and not a fault of the oven, but we'll never know. Anyway, I am still happy with the Wolf.

We've been debating 30" all gas ranges for months: Wolf for the look, Thermador for the stars, Bluestar for the non-nonsense cooking (I do not like the look of the open flame, but they make a sealed burner version that we have yet to see in person), and now we'd added Dacor's Distinctive one into the mix. Does any one have any pros/cons for any of them? Just when we decide on one of them, we second guess ourselves and switch over to another. This will keep on happening until the cabinets are installed and it's time to start cooking. (Background: We had a basic 5 burner GE at our condo, and we're cooking just fine on a 24" 25+ year old premier in the basement until our kitchen is completed.)

We did go with the Wolf and I was concerned about the small space between the range and the countertop so I had my contractor seal it with silicon on each side and now I am pleased not to worry about anything falling through there. I'm really enjoying cooking on the Wolf, and we paid extra ($150) for a telescoping rack, which as you say, is great! I am concerned about cleaning the interior of the oven. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thx!

After much analysis, we're going w/ the Dacor 30" all gas range-Distinctive series. It looks great, has 4 good burners w/ plenty of btus for us, solid oven door & telescoping rack, large sized oven (by comparison to the others) easy clean black porcelain top, and is fairly priced for what you get. (Also considered the Wolf, Thermador, Bluestar, and Bosch's Benchmark & 800 Series, all 30" all gas.) Will comment again on how it pans out in a few weeks. (Btw, so far Dacor's customer service has been extremely helpful, Thermador's was a bit rude and not very helpful.)

Hello, I have had a Dacor since 1998. It has been very problematic. Customer service is horrible once you are out of warranty. Biggest issue has been the electric control panel, which has burnt out many times and is expensive to fix. If you are stuck on Dacor, make sure you get a very extended warranty. Also, getting someone to service has been an issue. The person Dacor sends for service in our area (eastern Connecticut) is very rude and tempermental.

d7e001, in Dacor's defense, you are talking about a 1998 unit, which is almost 20 years old. Alot has changed not only for Dacor, but within the industry. Also, there is a big difference between an all gas range and a dual fuel, which you appear to be referencing. There are many more choices on the market for dual fuel than there are for all gas.

I'm sorry to hear that you have a rude servicer in your area. I bet Dacor would love to hear about it and to authorize another company to assist you. I have found Dacor here in California to be very easy to reach and quite cooperative. I would reach out to them because they don't know these things if you don't tell them.

desantis, yes it is a dual fuel, but I would suspect the quality prevails throughout all of their products. To clarify, all of our problems occurred within the first three years of purchase. And then, the very same issues have re-occurred during the life of this stove - multiple times. Granted it is 20 years old, but having spent more than we paid for this stove within the first five years is the issue. We kept this range limping along as it was the only stove that would fit into our existing cabinetry. We have since redone our stove area so that we can fit another brand once this dies for good. Then I'll be looking for another dual fuel or gas range and it will not be a Dacor. Nice looking ranges, but I haven't found the reviews to be in their favor. I've gotten the impression that they do not care about their service suppliers - I've tried.

Also was deciding between wolf snd thermidor. If it was based on visual I would have went wolf. But Thermidor gives the slide out ball bearing rack and costs about 400 less. But once they add the free Bosch dishwasher the choice was made. After spending SO MUCH remodeling my kitchen practicality has reigned me in. And I still get the professional range I wanted.
Anyone live in Florida in the keys area? Service on any of the above brands in this area? I have been researching and researching and reading all of these posts about appliances and calling. I wanted a wolf range but now am torn. Wolf, thermador, dacor, bluestar (which I probably couldn't get serviced here if I wanted that one). Mind boggling. And don't know if 1 line but will probably mix and match. Arg

Well, for what it's worth, we finally selected Dacor: Went with the entry level DR30GI slide-in and are so happy with everything about it. It looks great & works fine. We have a 36" hood opening, so it feels larger & more spacious. The big oven cavity is useful (large window & good light for for checking on progress), the burner placement is well-planned out, & the range from low-to-high is excellent. Water boils so quickly, everything else cooks well & easily. The front left burner which goes from low to super low and from low
to extremely high is very versatile, then there are 2 really good regular burners, and a 4th that goes from regular to super low; and all of them offer more than enough range for cooking. Clean up is extremely easy too--damp cloth wipes up everything. So glad we did not go with Wolf, Thermador, Bluestar or Bosch Benchmark, all of which we debated about endlessly for several months. Design-wise, Dacor has very clean lines and looks professional without calling undo attention to itself. Wolf is blatant, Thermador imposing, Bluestar rough looking, and the 5 burners on the Bosch seemed like overkill. (4 great burners is truly sufficient.) Dacor looks like Miele's gas range which is also simple & elegant (discovered it too late in the game to start considering it). The salesman tried to up-sell us to the fancier/more complex Dacor models, but all we needed was a simple, great gas range, and this one is it. Couldn't be more pleased. (Ironically, the appliance we're the least pleased with is a high-end Bosch DW--that's for another post. Our SZ 42" French door fridge is perfect, and we got a Cuisinart counter-top steam oven (to test out before getting an installed SO), and it's been suiting our purposes and we get to keep 2 more drawers that we had planned to give up for an installed steam oven...) Btw & fwiw, I called customer service for all of them, and Dacor went above & beyond (even sent a guy in the factory to measure something and call me back with the dims), BS was friendly, Wolf fine, and Therm was terrible.

Anyone consider the new Miele range? Looking at 30in gas: Miele vs. Wolf
  • 9 years ago
We are looking at the miele range either the 36 or 48 with griddle . Have considered wolf, thermador and bluestar. I'm leaning toward the miele, they have promotion now (very rare) and it will cover the dw. I am not a chef, I dont like the huge pro style that protrude 3 inches past counters. I am a good cook and I want quality, value and performance from my cooking appliances. I want it to be easy to use and maintain. I was impressed with Bluestar but prefer df over all gas.
In our previous kitchen, we had DCS wall ovens, 48" range top with griddle and dish drawers. I really liked the range top, wall oven and felt the wall ovens worked well until the mother board broke (after about 6 years) and can't get another. We sold the house and replaced the wall ovens with GE. We replaced the dish drawers after having it worked on a few times and then next repair would have been over $500. The DCS appliances worked well when they worked. Very bad customer service. Hopefully new ownership in company has resolved the issues.

Read your note with interest d7e001. Dacor was recommended by kitchen remodel contractor who like them and I used it from late 2001 until 2017. I liked the stove top which gave good even heat and was easy to clean. Simmering was hard so got a cast iron plate to put between flame and cookware but still had to watch closely even as low as I could get the flame. Over entire life of use occasionally had issues with burners not lighting and finally near end of my use just used a butane lighter. Oven was electric and had good heat control.

Down sides-I experienced the same problems it sounds like you experienced d7e001. I had to replace the electronics three times the last two I had to pay for. A couple of years after I got it, the entire large full width plastic front disintegrated and came off in my hands electronics and all, after removing knobs. The replacement which I paid for developed large cracks and I replaced again. I saw tell tale signs of beginning cracks as I was moving. The plastic holes for the holding mounting screws completely disintegrated so there was no way to repair the item.

Dacor was helpful at first but after first replacement of pretty clearly defective parts I paid for parts, did repairs and received what felt like a cold and less than helpful customer service. Guess I expected a little more understanding of my chagrin to having the entire front end of the Dacor electronics and all fall off after a few years use while preparing dinner for guests.

Yes, my repeated experiences were over years and one could posit that Dacor has made improvements: however, the best indicator of future performance & service is past performance & service. I'm in the process of buying all new kitchen appliances and I am not considering Dacor at all. After days of looking in person at models and at numerous online reviews Miele is most impressive (and substantially highest cost), Thermador (for best simmer burners), Blue Star (for awesome flame and BTUs), and Wolf (2016 & 2017 customer reviews are a buyer beware/caution!). Good thread above.

We purchased a Dacor and it has been the biggest lemon ever. We've had it now for about 10 years and the local appliance repair has been out about yearly. I've been looking to replace it with either a Wolf or a Thermador, 30", but not sure which way to go. The Dacor has to go!

I'm reading all these comments given I have the same decision to make. Thanks for the posts and keep it up!

@Kristin O’Brien what range did you ultimately choose? I am currently trying to decide between Wolf, Thermador and BlueStar. Thanks!

@lori cubbon Just saw this - I went with 30” wolf. I really wanted the 5 burners Thermador but I didn’t like the Thermador refrigerator and it was cheaper to buy a subzero/wolf than a subZero/Thermador. Better warranty too. At first I also liked the wider surface of the Thermador, but the counter guys said that if you’re cooking with large pans and they go over the edge you might affect the counter and I didn’t want to mess up my Cambria. I never need more than 4 burners and it comes with a telescoping rack. What I don’t like is my stainless steel scratched very early. Look up papertowels and stainless. That was a huge surprise. But as my mom says after 6 months you don’t really notice the annoying stuff.

I had a Thermador before (2 wall ovens and am electric cooktop) and they never broke. I think the wolf might be a little more fussy.

Any updates on satisfaction and repair issues? Why isn’t there a clear winner in this category?? Would love something super attractive AND functional AND reliable!! I have an old Dacor wall oven and gas cooktop that I love and have no issues with besides a click on one burner but because we are adding windows I have to go with and all in one range. What are the updates for 2020 and has anyone used the new 800 series Bosch industrial style dual fuel range?

This was a great thread. I'd love to hear updates as well. @Vermont Home I think there is no clear winner because there are very different tastes, styles, and budgets among consumers.

Thank you for the thread. Husband threw to me tonight-WOLF. I had been considering Bertazzoni and he said, why not get better quality? Ok! Thinking that although I'd "like to have" dual fuel. Gas top and oven works and works well is just right for me! I want quality, performance and longevity. Hoping to learn more.

Hi. Looking for updates on this thread. I was all set to do a Thermador 48 inch dual fuel range and then package the thermador fridge and DW. I have read lots of nasty reviews on the thermador now... mostly related to customer service. Does anyone have a thermador kitchen and have issues or good feedback? Other choices for us are the GE monogram (I don’t like the look of the new 2021 model) or wolf/subzero ( I like the subzero but less sold on the wolf range). Any feedback on these choices, especially updates on thermador experience would be appreciated!!

@Kristen O'Brien thank you for all of the information. Unfortunately, with Covid (and life) our build has been very slow. I still have not made an order for kitchen appliances. I was going crazy thinking about it all. Honestly, it seems like there is some kind of drawback to EVERY appliance brand. At this point, I think all you can do it make a decision and hope for the best! I have in my head that I will be ordering a Sub Zero refrigerator (really like their 42" French door), Wolf Duel Fuel 48" range, Bosch dishwasher and some kind of microwave. I just have to have faith that it will end up okay.

I am in a new build now (4 years old) and I remember stressing over so many little details while building. Honestly, now I look back and think why was I even worried about that? I think your Mom is right, 6 months in and it really isn't even noticed anymore.

Btw, your kitchen is beautiful! I love your backsplash and the color of island peninsula. Is that a stain you used on that cabinetry? I'd love to know the color, That is another thing I keep going back and forth on....all white kitchen or a dark or wood stained island. Decisions, decisions!

@Lori Cubbon @STACEY CLEGG @Barbara Dodge @Shalonda Hi everyone -- I can't give you an update on Thermador but we've had our Wolf for a year+ and it is fine. No repair though we have called in for advice on why the burner didn't work after I poured water on it (has to dry - can take a bit). They do have a good site and fast answering call center. Again, my mom loves her (very old) Thermador so I don't know how it compares to current manufacturing. With the four burners I've never thought "wow, I wish I had 5 to cook on" so the size works for us BUT larger would be nice to slide pots around or have a place to put hot cookie sheets when the top is full of pots. Is wolf worth the price? Probably not, compared to fine mid-market ones. But like a grackle, I was drawn by the look and those red knobs. I'm a snob. I admit it. Food does get stuck in that crack at the front and that's annoying. I haven't run the cleaning cycle, but should soon, just to test it. The stainless does still scratch but everyone is trained to use microfiber cloths. With the purchases (wolf, subzero), I have a 5-year warranty. Sometimes I do forget to turn OFF the gas bc simmer is so low. Also, the FAN MATTERS! If you are getting one of those monster sizes, you should really get a monster-sucking fan.

@Lori Cubbon Thanks Lori! My cabinets are Dura Supreme. They've been fine, but paint does ding with use (a little heartbreak every time, lol). The wood stained cabinets are also Dura Supreme and the color is "feather." We live in MN and I wanted a really bright kitchen but really love the darker "island" it helps because it is near the back door and doesn't show all the traffic. I'd do it again. Your kitchen sounds huge compared to mine but I think a different colored island would be lovely. All white in my space now feels like it would be too much. I didn't want more white tile. I like a little glitter and this tile has some mother of pearl tiles. https://www.artistictile.com/products/tambourine-traps-gjgtambourinetraps?variant=33480307834968 I'm sure whatever you will do it will be beautiful! A whole house - wow! I'd probably have a nervous breakdown, lol!

@Lori Cubbon @STACEY CLEGG @Kristen O'Brien Pretty kitchen!! Thanks ladies! I too am a bit of snob when it comes to my passions. Somethings I don't really care about all that much. I am being a stickler for my cabinets and I am not really caring if natural cherry is "in" or not. I'm looking for warmth in my north facing kitchen and the wood will certainly do that. The other big thing I care about are the appliances. Here is the snob part--love the idea of the Wolf. Bertazzoni is nice and GE Cafe has lots of bells and whistles, but then, there is Wolf complete with red knobs. And yep, that means a great vent hood because that extra heat is going to do something to be sure and I am not keen on heat/steam/smoke messing up my handcrafted custom cherry wood! After that, Looking at Bosch fridge and dishwasher. Bought a Breville microwave last fall and it is fabulous!.

Ok, I've read most of the comments on here. Here's the truth. WOLF RANGE HANDS DOWN!!! Here's some of the reasons why. 1st, all cooktop burners are 2 burners in one. Main burner and a simmer burner. That's a design exclusive feature nobody else offers. 2nd, all burners and electronics are covered by a 5yr warranty for the part. Every other brand is only 2 yrs..3rd, even when you are out of warranty and something breaks a simple call to their customer service will get you some level of help. I've never found another brand that does that. they are simply the best. Hands down.

Love my Wolf 30" gas on gas.

Works efficiently with no crazy bells or whistles. Grates extend across the top, convection fan does a lovely job of distributing heat in the oven so cookies brown evenly on any rack. Bought a 2nd telescoping rack for holiday baking.

Only complaint is small seam between front pan and frame. Crumb catcher.

Also, love my Victory range hood. Works like a dream! Both are great value with high end look and exceptional quality.

Update on my wolf: all is still great, but given the price of Gas, and my bad habit of forgetting to turn it off when it’s on a low simmer, I’m actually thinking I wish I went induction. a much different look but possibly better for the environment. Hubby still loves gas. A definite crumb catcher in the front.

I use a toothbrush to eradicate crumbs. Um, I too forgot to turn off a burner the other day. Didn't tell hubs.

Gas is still cheaper and over all more environmentally friendly than electric.

(Electricity often uses coal, nuclear to power plants).

I love how the whole Wolf unit is designed to maximize surface, btu, heat retention.
