I would not ordinarily expect to see these floors in such a traditional space so what my first question would be is were you trying to go more contemporary? That would affect the suggestions for what to change although you have a lot of traditional furnishings.
I would change the LR rug to something without as much pattern.

what is the color of walls, gray? If it's gray I would change it in some light brown, let me say cream. Big picture would be great behind dining table, some pencil drawing. Change chandelier , put simple one. Armchairs are good idea, and for me floor is great and yes you can change rug but some simple one-color one! I wouldn't change floor even a bit! In fun and unusual. :)

That's an interesting comment and food for thought. On some level we may have been trying to go more contemporary, but mostly we didn't think through well enough what the floors would look like in our space.

Since we don't have the budget to replace the furniture all at once, I'd love suggestions about prioritizing pieces that do and don't work so we can begin incorporating updated and contemporary furnishings that work with our existing traditional pieces.

I understand!Can you show what your kitchen looks like? I feel like I am seeing some dark curvy traditional furniture and then some sturdier almost country furniture. I am wondering which is more representative of your style. My first thought is to start switching out some of the more traditional curvier furniture with some pieces with clean lines. I certainly wouldn't expect you to change everything just for the floors!I also think lighting makes a big difference to update a space.You could consider a neutral sisal rug for under the dining room table.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and for the nice comments about the floors! i really appreciate it hearing all of them. I was thinking a larger rug in a neutral tone like the one pictured. Walls are a medium grey, we actually really like the color of the walls, but were trying to warm it up with the floors. :)

I agree, floors lend themselves to a more contemporary feel. The walls would look better in a lighter color, creamy white, something less grey. The dining room cabinet in the corner looks too bulky. So much room for change if budget allows. New chandelier, rug, etc. Just depends on the direction you are going and how much you plan to spend.

I'd love to change the dining room cabinet! The cabinet, like most of our furniture, is a hand-me-down from a family member, so none really work great together or express our taste that well (but they're all nice quality and we've been grateful for our family's generosity).

The floors were our first big purchase together in the house (the carpet that came with the house was a nasty beige number) and I guess we're finding out what our taste is really like.
