For the chairs, I ordered 8 of the same. I was thinking of adding black nailhead trim to the backs of the head chairs to made them stand out a bit more. Would anyone have any other suggestions of what I could do to make them different?

Here is a picture of my chairs and table. I am very pleased with how they look. I'm thinking of adding some sort of neutral tone on tone wall paper to add a bit of texture and depth to the walls.

It doesn't seem like the mirrored credenza I like will fit if I keep the table centred at the light. It would fit if I moved the table further down the room but I guess it will all depend on the light fixture we end up getting and if we can move it over slightly.

I found a similar chandelier at a lower price and it measures 49" long. Do you think it would be too big over the 96" table? The other option is the 40" fixture from RH which is more expensive...

Typical recommendation is at least half the length, and 49" puts your right around there...

I talked to the manufacturer of the light fixture and it's on back-order for 60-90 days so I guess I'll have to wait until they get some in stock! In the meantime, we are looking into rug ideas for the space.

We are leaning towards a "better than sisal" area rug from Urban Barn to break up the dark table and floors. The color we are looking at is beige but I'm waiting to stop by the store to see it in person before pulling the trigger.

Furniture looks great. I kind of like the smoked version of the rectangular fixture. Make sure you get the perfect scale when you order. You won't want it to look too small over that nice table. Can you please post a pic of the fixture you're currently considering and it's size? Glad you aren't buying the mirrored console. Have you considered a bit of pattern in the rug, maybe a big open floral or a geometric? Pottery Barn and West Elm have nice rug options.

I might have some fun with a rug in here since the furniture is neutral. I also like this light fixture in this last pic and could see it in your room. But, I do like the style you're looking at as well.

Thanks for the feedback! The fixture I'm currently considering looks pretty much identical to the RH one and has the same dimensions (49¼"W x 14"D x 17¾"H). When I was trying to choose between the 40" and 49" options, I placed them to scale over the dining room layout I had created. I attached both below. I think 49" will definitely work!

As for the rug, I do love the idea of a pattern of some sort to add a little bit of interest. However, I measured the size we would need and I am going to have to go with something that offers custom sizing as I'm looking at getting a 7' x 12' rug for the space. This will allow a 2' perimeter from the table top which I think should be enough space to allow guests to pull out their chairs and remain on the rug.

The measurement constraints led me to the rug I linked to above. It's apparently softer than a regular sisal rug, can be customized and it's easy to clean should there be any food spillage.

Of course, I am open to other options before I make a final decision! I'll check out West Elm and Pottery Barn to see if they have anything that could work with the space we have. Our room is only 10' x 14' so I don't want the rug covering up most of the hardwood.

It looks like you need 8' in width for you rug as adding 48" to the width of your table results in 7.58'. You don't want to allow any less than the 2' on each side, so I'd go with a minimum of 8' wide. As you calculated, you need 12' in length. If the room is 10x14, I might actually forego the rug since you'll only have 1 foot of floor showing on all sides. Especially since the size issue limits your choices so much, I might just skip it and let the pretty floors show. The chandelier size looks nice at 49" long.

You're right for the width - sorry for the typo! I think I'm going to tape out the area with some painters tape and see what it looks like. The whole idea of adding a rug was to break up the table from the floors. I just find it really dark and the details of the legs kind of blend in. This is a tough call!

If you can find a carpet pattern you like, have the store cut it custom length/width and bind it for you. I've had that done several times...including one with a rectangle within a rectangle within a rectangle (3 different but coordinating plain colors). It was awesome...and affordable.

We are thinking of doing either a wallpaper or stencil pattern on the walls of the room. This will most likely affect whether we go for a solid rug or not. I really like the following stencil pattern. I'd most likely do something neutral (surprise surprise) and tone on tone. Either the same paint color but one with a gloss finish or a few shades lighter... not sure yet. In that case, I'd probably got with a simple rug so that it won't compete with the walls.

I'll try to take a better picture of the back wall of our dining room. It has 2 narrow windows on either side so I'm a little stuck with what to do there in terms of window coverings. We have some roller shades there now but I want to add something for added texture. Stay tuned!

Shal1217, I'm thinking the sisal look rug might not be the right look with the chandelier you have in mind. I think the rugs being discussed just above had a bit dressier of a look, more consistent with the light fixture.

For added glam you need a beautiful classic elegant feminine chandelier! If it's a very long table like you're describing consider using 2 smaller chandeliers, one for each end. Wouw !

I was initially thinking of doing 2 chandeliers but given the effort needed to get additional wiring and moving the existing one, I think the one I found will be perfect.

Plus I think it's glam enough even if it's a less traditional shape!

I hear that - electricians are expensive and there can be drywall repairs too - ugggh.

Plus the cost of having to buy 2 fixtures! Lol

What you need is a very hefty and long chandelier. also you need to have the chandelier about 3-4 feet from the table, otherwise it looks like a spider waiting to pounce on the diners.

Just wondering - because I'm going to be dealing with this same issue once I refinish my floors - did you ever think about going with the natural stain on your table so it would contrast with your floors? I think I'm leaning in that direction - so that I won't necessarily feel the need for a rug. Your design sense is exquisite : )

Thank you! There is a lighter option for this table but my kitchen table is already in a natural finish (see picture) so I thought bringing in a darker table would make the space different and a little more formal.

We aren't in a rush to buy a rug though, so I am fine with waiting for the perfect option to come up!

I still haven't pulled the trigger on our chandelier (it is back ordered right now) but the hubby and I were at Home Sense yesterday and saw this rug that was the perfect dimensions for our dining room! Which light did you end up going with for your dining room?

Given the pattern in the rug, I think a graphic design (wallpaper/stencil) may be out of the question for the walls. I was thinking of doing the back wall in drapery all across given the awkward size of the windows. Perhaps I can do the walls in a texture wallpaper instead of something graphic? Or maybe some sort of molding? Thoughts?

I would love to do crown molding eventually down the line as well.

If it were my room, I wouldn't add the chair rail, but that's just personal preference.

I was just looking at pictures again (I'm at work) and I don't think a chair rail would work anyway, since the wall with the stairs and butlers' pantry isn't large enough to make it look decent.

Thanks Ann. I have the urge to do something a little different with this room, hence why I keep on trying to do something to the walls. A textured wallpaper is definitely a front runner though and I don't think I'll veer too far off the color palette we already have.
