New flooring for main floor -ceramic or wood in front entrance?

we are putting new flooring on our main floor and we are debating about putting hardwood in the main entrance as you walk in. We live in Canada so we can have a harsh snowy winter. Attached are pictures of the front entrance and then what is surrounding it. (Right is living room entrance, left hallway to powder room, dining room and laundry room and straight ahead is staircase and hallway to kitchen (not shown). We were going to put ceramics up to the stairs but have decided to cut it off at the front entrance which measures 4 ft 6" X 4 ft 5". Is this a good idea and will hardwood be durable?
