i would recommend put the sofa little back from the tv stand, because it would give some room in the front of the tv and the sofa. then the sofa would be near your second rug is and make the room more better and conferrable

If I do that the couch will be directly in line with the front door. I was concerned it would be a little awkward? Also, because the floor is tile, if the couch is not on a rug it moved anytime you sit on or bump it which is why i had moved it close to the tv so it could be on the edge of the rug. i do like having more space in the tv area- it's not so crowded. The pics show the couch moved back about half a foot

i have another idea lets try to put the two black tables you have and put them on the sides of your couch, where you have the red sofa it can go right next to your lamp. And then move your tv stand and tv and lamps to your window near the door so it would be better for moving around but also you could move your rug that is under the sofa and move it forward

I like the couch moved back....it makes so much sense in so many ways. I think it can even go back a bit more if you are worried about it being lined up with the door.

And, yes, those tiled floors and furniture sliding all over! Take the larger rug and put it with the couch....for now, to get an idea of how it feels and looks. Maybe the back area will not even need one any more? Put the front feet of the couch on the rug to anchor it.

One more thought......the piece you are using as a chaise with the couch.....try it as an ottoman/coffee table. Please. For fun. Move the two smaller tables out for a bit and center the ottoman and we can play with decor on it later. Slide the red chair in a bit....maybe front legs on the rug, too?

I might try rotating the grouping one quarter turn, but no matter the placement, a single rug is plenty. If you keep the current placement, allow a slight but even border around the grouping; the remaining exposed tile will suggest a walkway around. If maintaining brightness will be an issue, consider mottled tones or tight patterns for interest and ability to hide dirt, such as a berber or oriental..

that room is beautiful! I think I understand the layout you suggested, but there is a doorway to the hall in the corner where I am standing to take the photo so the red chair cant go there. your suggestion is very similar to what my husband originally suggested though. that red chair is really comfortable and a great reading chair, but i think a chair more like the ones in the photo you posted would work better for seating and function. the couch comes apart and we played with having a love seat and a chaise but it just didn't work (the "exploded" couch just takes up too much room) unless you put the chaise where the red chair is and got an arm chair to put opposite of it. a 12' x 16' rug which you suggested and I was thinking about initially would cover nearly the entire room. the whole space is 17.5' wide x 19' long with the front door in the center of the one 19' wall.

Move the sofa back so it is 3' from the bookcase on the wall behind it. Pull the red chair up next to the sofa, perhaps angled a bit toward the TV. Adjust the position of the chair so the door doesn't open into it, but also so that people entering the door are encouraged to go around, not through, the seating arrangement. Try that arrangement, then see what size rug you need to get front feet of all seating on the edge.

I like it! The question is what to do with the little tables. We need some where to put drinks. They are really light and easy to move. So we could just set them somewhere close by until we need them I guess.

OH! I like this a LOT! You need pillows for the darker couch.....again, for fun, take the two big ones from the red and place them there to see what it looks like.

Do you have a tray you could place on the ottoman for drinks? I know feet use the ottoman, too, but a tray will also keep a glass upright for you.

The floor lamp should go over by the red piece.....it serves no purpose beside the tv right there. Not liking the table there, even though it FITS. It just does not fit, if that makes sense? It looks like it was put there, which it was. LOL

Is there room on the side of the couch furthest from the door? I cannot tell how big they are or how much walking room there would be....or if they are tall enough to go beside the arm of the couch and be able to reach a drink.

We dont have a tray... I put a wood cutting board down though to visualize. I moved one of the pillows from the red chair, but they have to stay there because it has no soft backing... just the pillows. It is a little too big for the couch, but I agree the couch needs some throw pillows. I also agree about the lamp. The one next to the tv isn't going to stay there. I was going to move it over by the other side of the front door since that side of the room has no light other than the window, but i have to cut a hole in the back of the bookshelf to access the outlet over there. I moved the other lamp to behind the chair. This is already looking a lot better!

OK.......the pillows get to stay with the red, but have fun shopping for ones for the couch. They add so much, as does a throw draped across one end.VERY clever to use the cutting board to visualize a tray. Will you put one on your shopping list? I promise you will find one that is reasonably priced. I hate to ask people to go shopping just because they rearrange, but I think a few pillows, a throw and a tray will finish off the space for you. AND no rug to buy!!!

There's not room on the far side of the couch for the table and they are pretty short. About the same height at the ottoman actually so you can't reach a drink over the arm of the couch.

Wait....do you have throws? I cannot tell what is beside the red chair????

The floor lamp beside the couch....hmmmm.......hate to think of a cord running across the floor.

Few other things.....and I apologize since they were not a part of your post.......the art between the door and the window. Interesting and such a pop of color......but it seems crowded there. Do you have a larger wall it can have to truly shine in the room? I think that wall will feel better without anything there as the drapes have enough drama, so to speak.

The curtains on the door....privacy???? I get that, but wonder if maybe blinds would work better than the curtain?

Because the floor is so geometric, I chose an abstract rug. If the corner feels naked when you pull out the chair, stick a plant back there.

I am kind of like that commercial on tv that shows how to move appliances....just wiggle one finger and it is done! Or maybe Samantha on Bewitched and twinkle my nose!

One more slight detail....let the drapes behind the red chair hang straight down. Oh, and find some red in the pillows to tie all the colors together.

Abbyjean... I really like the second rug! And the plant idea too bc it does feel a little odd with the space back there even though I move the lamp to behind it. We do have blankets/throws... I got a standing towel rack from Ikea and use it to hold blankets. Here are 3 different ones all at the same time. The white one on left has a really delicate handcut pattern in it that doesnt show up in the photo. I don't mind comments on any other design ideas! They are all welcome! The curtains on the window are for privacy... they were there when we bought the house (just a month ago). The door has a clear glass window so I have been meaning to look for a window masking and just ditch the door curtain altogether. I have the curtains tied back bc the kitties (who have claws) like to try to pull them out of the way so they can see the birds. My intention is just tie them back during the daylight hours and let them hang down otherwise. PS. I love that commercial where she moves furniture with just her finger! As for the artwork... most of it is still sitting in the guest room while we decide where to put it. Maybe move the frogmanders (we disagree on whether they are frogs or salamanders haha!) to the dining area?

I kind of want to change out the lamps. There are no ceiling lights in the living room. I was thinking of a more diffused light floor lamp like these?

Your throws are beautiful and love that you already have some! Maybe you have some pillows hiding somewhere, too. I would just keep the one over the arm closest to the door and put the other two either back on the ladder, or put one on the ladder and one on the red....over the arm and not over the back.

Taking the curtain off the door will be soooo nice, too, and I bet finding a spray or vinyl for it will be fairly easy to do.

Your bar area looks........fun! Wondering what it would look like if you had the flip down door open? Break up some of the wood right there???? Or do you feel like you would bump in to it all the time?

yeah it's really cool to see someone digitally put a rug in our room Groveraxel! Any suggestions for where to shop? I've been keeping an eye on Joss and Main. The stinker is that I think we need a flat weave rug and one of our kitties LOVES to pull up little carpet fibers on the existing ones so we have to cut them off. it's amazing how much you have to pet-proof and kid-proof based on their particular habits/interests.

We keep the bar closed bc of the kitties and bc we'll bump into it, but whenever we have company over we open it up. Here's a shot of what it looks like fully open :) We brew our own beer, but I made the hubby put the kegerater in the walk-in pantry- no way is that going in the living area! I think the magazine holders look distracting... I'll have to find somewhere else to put them. Maybe move that random bookcase at the far end of the couch that is just holding odds and ends to a bedroom and put the magazines in there and get the nicknacks on the shelf in a better arrangement.

Our last place had glass in the door too, but it had this etched country scene with springer spaniels which was odd but interesting and worked well for privacy. we never put up a curtain or blinds.

GREAT idea to move a shelf to a bedroom and the magazines with it. Getting rid of them on the lower shelves will be a huge change. The general idea with shelves is 1/3 books, 1/3 decor and 1/3 blank space. You may need/want to go through some books and see if there are any you can part with/share with others?Moving the shelf by the couch might also mean you would have a wall for some of the art you have stored away???

You're welcome any time you ever visit Hood River :) We can definitely part with some books. We've been hauling them around in boxes for the past 4 years never wanting to unpack them until we bought a place. I'll keep the rule of thirds in mind when I start arranging the shelves and be sure to post some pics when I get some of our art up.

And remember, too, to vary how you place the books.....some lying down and some upright. It will be sooooo pretty!
