I have no lanterns but I've seen some very nice ones in all sizes at Pottery Barn recently. Do you think I could replace the lamp with lanterns to the right of the painting, and keep only the basket to the left under the painting? I wish I had photoshop!!! LOL. (Lamps are useless on the console - the plug isn't extremely close and we'll never use them there anyway).

PS don't mind that banner on the wall - it's from my recent baby shower and wasn't ready to take it down just yet (it's a boy!) :-)

Funny side note: I got it in my head that we needed to replace all the outlet covers, as well as electrical outlets and light switches, in my home because they were old and discolored. My poor husband has been working on it for days.

Congrats on that new little baby boy to look forward to! AND thanks for sliding the table down. I like it and I really like how the frame on the art works with the table. The basket looks like a good height to fill in the wall space between the art and the table. Pottery Barn has great lanterns, but ouch on the price to buy more than one. Do you have a Pier One near by??? Or a Hobby Lobby? And maybe you could find blue candles like the blue in the art to place inside the lanterns?

bonnie - It's no doubt an exciting time!I actually also went on an outlet cover obsession shortly after I moved here... must've been that a few were really dirty, and so I overdid it and took off most in the house. Unfortunately many are still off... hope you're relaxing as much as you need to...it must be fun to move your things around and look it over and do it again.. Hi there! I really think you need 2 big baskets under your table or 2 stools that you could pull out to sit on...try a stack of big coffee table books, with a cool object sitting on top beside the lamp. A dark tray would look great , holding the books or an interesting wood box or bowl to hold keys, cell phone, sunglasses...make it pretty and practical. I love a vase with a large branch in it as well, to really fill up that wall. You might want to try stacking some art, leaning them up against the wall rather than hanging.

Stain the table a medium to dark shade of oak. Check stores like Home Goods for 2 large, deep wicker baskets to go under your table and give you storage. Have the dimensions you need written down to avoid mistakes.

I think the picture should be as wide as the one you have, but much taller. Consider buying a large canvas and doing your own abstract. Streaks of the dark blue in your dining chairs with some yellows and oranges would add some energy. If you do not like your first attempt, paint it out in white and start over. Since you have no outlets there, go for big sconces on either side of the picture. Pull them in a little. The lamps are too far on the end. The sconces should be industrial or rugged. From your pictures, I can see you are not going for a cottage look.

If you have a need or a love of symmetry, give in to it. It is your home. The centered artwork, matching wicker baskets below and pair of sconces should satisfy your need for this.

Greenery adds a lot. If you do not have a green thumb, or your hall does not have enough light, invest in a really nice silk Boston Fern. I thought the ones at Michael's were not lush enough. I bought their largest and their smallest. Layered the smallest on top of the largest. Beautiful. Looks really expensive and was not. This could sit on a few large hardcover books to give it height and you could place a basket on the table next to it for your necessities that you like to have there. Add one more accessory to this group. It could be a tall, fat candle on a pedestal or a big, old looking, galvanized watering can. Check stores like Home Goods , Ross, Tuesday Morning. Just be sure it is in scale and proportion to the other two things.

That pottery barn pic gets me every time and it is tough to make items from another place work then. I love the blue demi john, too, and it could be perfect with the blue in the art and really make a statement in the grouping/vignette. That whole space works as you may want to save a place for the baby's pic, too. I do have a code to use online at PB that you are welcome to use...it is for $10 off a $50 purchase, which will help.

If you keep the painting, I would put it over to one side since the table is so long and that way you can balance out all the items too.

Not the right color, but it just gives an idea of how something taller would look on the left side next to the basket. Thoughts?

Then, on the right side, I could do 3 different sized (starting pretty tall) lanterns. I could move the table slightly more to the right to put the frame all the way to the left, but can I leave the frame at the current height? If I move the painting it's likely the holes won't be patched for months considering I'm lazy and my husband is being kept busy with the other million honey-do projects on his list, LOL.

Looks good and I think I would try one silver candlestick on the right side. What is in the round bowl? I would add some colorful objects to accent the colors you like. And as far as a taller vase, it would look better on the right side as well since you have room to go tall. In it's place I would go with a small round vase with a couple daisies.

I think I would move the table a bit more to the right still as long as you feel it still looks ok in that space. Can it be centered between the left and the middle legs?

Odd numbers work best, which you now have. Wonder if the basket and the orb stayed under that art...centered.....and then the three lanterns on the other end.

Lynnie - thanks! The bowl is filled with decorative balls. everdebz mentioned they might look nice on one side so I grabbed them from the family room and put them there to experiment. I think, on the right side, if I'm going with 3 lanterns, I wouldn't want a vase. What do you think?

abby - the wall is about 120" so I have room to play with. I'm starting to get a little worried, though, that as I pull the table to the right, I'm leaving a huge, empty space before the staircase on the left.

I went back and looked at your first pics to see that space and I see what you mean about the blank space being left. AND does it matter if the table is centered with the sofa? So what might need to happen......is decide where you want the table and then hang the art so it is centered over just the one side of it. 8 inches is nice between the art and the table........what is it now? I will come over and help spackle and fill in the nail hole that will show.

It could be the pregnancy hormones but the more I look at this the more I think the table just isn't the right thing here. Or maybe it is, but the wall is still huge and blank, no matter where the table is. I think this is a job for an art or frame gallery, which I do not have the guts to try to master.

Holy cow, a whopping 11" between bottom of art and table. We measured the painting originally to the middle of the wall, but I think I winged the height of it. Husband said, "this good?" And I replied, "Sure, why not?"

I think it has been on your mind too long and you just want resolution....makes sense. And a trip to Vegas is just what I need right now.....I live in the midwest and we had below zero cold and snow and wind today and more tomorrow.

Funny....I just googled the table and saw all that......I love PB and their design style, but for some reason, the walls and the table top in every picture of this seems like over load. And I never thought I would say that about PB.

Oh, overload for sure. I'm a big fan of "less is more". But if I ever did this it would look like a ratty mess. Like a poor excuse for a second hand shop.

Why not use some live plants? Collected on trays, placed on a cake plate collection, Or funky carnival glass dishes? Moss, glass, ferns or succulents some stones or small iron figures, if you vary the heights, you can make a great display. I have to say, I would exchange the painting for a mirror.

The console decor from Pottery Barn below is overkill, I agree. But please notice: everything is interesting, unique, antique. No bowls with balls. And nothing dinky.

This table is big enough for a themed collection. And it's focal, so it deserves something more than scavenged items from various parts of the house. Please do not rush out and buy the PB lanterns. I want you to think about what you want this wall to say about you and your family. I want you to fill it with things you love.

jodi - thanks! This house, with all its solar screens, is where live plants go to die!! I also would prefer a mirror. But the beautiful (and large) ones are usually expensive and, with a baby on the way, I can't justify it!

Grover: Ironically, there is a small bowl with a single ball on that PB photo (Jokingly pointing that out). I love all your input. It's always so helpful. Scavenged things from around the house is what all my decor comes down to. It's the tragedy that is my home, LOL.

Your husband is going to come home and say, "why are all our decorations in the front entry?"

He looked so puzzled when I randomly went to the table and started dragging it off to the side yesterday. "I'm going to block that website you look at."

I recommended rattan balls - it was to go with the needed basket.... Grover made a good point to bring pretty things only into the house -- who says they're ugly? but it's small since I feel vindicated by your own photo!! mmbwhahhhhhaaa.........:)

everdebz - Thank you! I liked the idea of the rattan balls. And I don't mind moving things from here to there and trying out different suggestions. Does anyone ever get this stuff right the first time?? (LOL, don't answer that!)

It's true. And he's a real champ. He goes along with most of it (even though it might often cause some extra work for him).

The problem I have is that I'm the opposite of a packrat. If something doesn't find a place in a short amount of time I usually get rid of it quickly. I don't realize something had sentimental value until it's gone. It's hard to decorate meaningfully that way. I hope I change my ways with a baby here. Otherwise he'll wonder, when he's grown, where his first baby blanket went, or why there are no photo albums of him!!!! LOL.

Sorry if this idea was already suggested, but what about an orchid? An orchid will provide height and will bloom for 3-4 months. You can get a pretty, decorative pot that you will re-use. You can place it on the one side of the table or place it in the center with candle sticks on each side. And you will get a splash of color. Just a thought. You may totally be opposed to live plants/flowers, but sometimes I think less is better. A blue pot with white orchids would look amazing and the blue would bring out the colors in your painting.

Small glass items with color is nice. When I said a vase, I meant a small one. Usually people think of very large vases.

I think people usually think too small. OK, bonnieanneryan, I've been collecting for you. I did a Moroccan table, an African table, and a bird table. If those don't suit, we could do a McCoy pottery table (that could get pricey), an astronomy table, or maybe a nurse table with all sorts of gruesome antique medical instruments. Oh, yeah, now THAT would be cool...

Karen - I love orchids. But plants really don't survive well here. I keep the home too warm, but there's not enough sunlight for the plants that like the warmth.

grover - love those bird prints. All these tables are "too much" of all the things. LOL.
