Get a nice semi flush lantern to define the area properly

Well, I don't know about design considerations, but from the functional point of view, if this is your main doorway, I'd want a small table on one side (maybe with a mirror over it) and something like an umbrella stand on the other. The door itself doesn't need anything unless you find/have something you like to see. The trend is to have a more striking light, maybe a pendant, but that's up to you as well.

What is the exterior style of your home? What drew you to it? Do you favor traditional or modern? What colors appeal to you (the colors you wear are quite telling)?

I would add a fabulous pendant/lantern. I would also add a nice size rug. I am not sure of the dimensions of the space but if large enough, I would add a round table in the center with accessories. Hope this helps!

Great ideas everyone. thanks for your feedback.

I think you need an area rug... Your current rug is a tad small.

First, I think of safety and limiting someone coming in--that you haven't invited. Those side lights are easily broken, does your deadbolt have a key to lock it from the inside? If not, that's the first thing I'd change out--minimal cost--maximum benefit to protect you and your belongings.

Next, you need a larger entry rug which will do two things: protect your floors and bring more scale to the room. Think of something that makes a statement, exudes warmth, welcoming people. But, keep in mind it'll need to be professionally cleaned too, so I wouldn't put a valuable antique rug there.

yeah the current rug is just to ensure we keep our hardwoods as clean as possible - it was never intended to be a perm fixture. You are dead on regarding the doors. although we have an alarm system we are looking to add some more secure locks to entry way.
