We bought a home this year that was built in 1956. It's one and a half stories. The first floor is all original hardwood except in the small kitchen (a newer, more red hardwood) and the bathroom which has grey, porcelain tile flooring. Upstairs is a different story! The upstairs is 400 sq ft. It is split into two rooms at the top of the stairs. There's no doors, so its pretty open. Half of the floor is original flooring (2 1/4" wide pine or oak). The other half, the stairs, and the landing had miserable, nasty, terrible carpeting which we pulled up and revealed original vinyl flooring. It is hideous, cracked, and needs to be covered or removed. We're going to re-do the stairs with pine or oak slabs, so we're left with a landing and room (about 240 sq ft) that needs flooring. Matching the existing flooring seems to be out of our budget/skill level (we're DIYing), so what should we do? Should we continue the wood look with a totally different color and texture for contrast? We've also considered tile (a natural stone that's totally different) and something more out-of-the-box like paper bag. We like the idea of natural stone tile, but we're worried about it not going/being an issue for buyers in the future. Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated!
