Instead of the tv above fireplace, have a cabinet maker in to create a wall unit on that soaring wall. That would be a much better viewing angle and fill the space.

Go around to stores or shop Art.com for two matching prints to stack above fireplace.

Here's a few examples of how others have handled the tall walls. They all have a few things in common 1 .lighting such as large chandelier of some type. 2. some large scale artwork 3. Ok to leave some wall space blank. This is where your personal taste and imagination comes in. Use your imagination to make some art, frame a huge map or clothing ie. colorful Kimono, antique wedding dress, antique door, quilt, large screen, a set of similarly framed art a colorful canvas that you and your kids make with finger painting and colors. Have fun!

They really are that high.

You have really lovely high ceilings, which of course give you the issue of what to do with them. As mmilos suggested, you're going to want to bring the heights of the ceiling down visually. Dividing the ceiling and painting the upper portion a darker color is going to help visually bring the ceiling lower. The fireplace area is nice but may need a little more dimension. Look into having custom fireplace unit put in the maybe bumps out further into the room, like below:


When it comes to artwork and accessories, the key is going to be "bigger is better" in this case. You'll need larger artwork.

One way to also bring the is also with a chandelier that can help fill the void in the room and visually take up more space in the area.
