The strong vertical lines of the siding are what make a great modern statement on this home. Stone on the chimney, as long as it wasn't something like a river rock, could work. I'm thinking ashlar stacked. Another item that would make a huge difference would be to choose a metal roof. There's a lot of roof exposed, and doing it in a color, like a steely blue, could really perk up the look. Maybe look into the metal shingles that look like cedar if you think that there would be too many vertical lines. I'd also suggest painting the front door. It needs a bright modern color.

I tend to concur with the previous poster on the standing seam metal roof. There is a lot of SF of asphalt shingles on this house and over the years they are streaking. I would replace the front door with a minimal stained wooden one and put in a flagstone stoop and walkway.

Hi. I personally don't think emphasizing the chimney with such a heavy look would be good. Maybe the front stone would look clean and simple though, and seem lodge? though that's a lot of look.... what about a bottom in stone and same color for upper...

If the roof shingles don't need to be replaced, you can have them washed professionally, which will remove the streaks and return the roof to it's original color and basically look new. Regarding refacing, I would remove the chimney if it's only a design element and not a real chimney. I don't think stone is the answer. Just repaint the siding as well as the window trim, in a contrasting color. And yes, you can paint vinyl windows. Sherwin Williams has paint for that. Regarding colors, sorry I can't help you there, except to say that I like a dark gray with white trim, since you have a black roof.

A facelift for this home just comes down to budget. I think the massings mixed with the vertical siding and funky shed roofs (which I love…all about the funk!) are reminiscent of the architecture we saw coming out of the 80s. It goes without saying that the more money you put into it the better it will look just because it has cool lines to begin with. I wouldn’t do anything with the chimney because it acts as a modern version of a “campanile” which gives the building hierarchy and helps with the diagonals. I’m not sure how old that roof is, but it doesn’t look too bad. Looks like it is need of a good pressure-washing for sure but it looks like it is in pretty good shape. The landscaping obviously needs to be updated. Here is what I would do in the interest of budget: 1) Nix all the siding because that is the biggest factor that dates this home. Homes are still being made in today’s world with shingles so the roof wouldn’t be my top priority unless of course it is old and leaking. Replace all the siding with stucco and go with a smooth trowel with channel reveals at every break and every window. Play with the channel reveals…some horizontal and some vertical. Paint the stucco white. What this will do is accentuate the asymmetry of the home. 2) Keep the landscaping very minimal/clean. Play with the lines of the architecture…bring the architecture into the ground plane. 3) Update the front doors. By the look of the picture I am estimating those to be a pair of 3080 doors. If budget is tight just replace with some modern yet clean double doors. If you have a little more money to spend, go for one 6080 pivot door with the pivot point being 12” offset. Basically what this means is that when you open the door, the entire wall will open. I am doing this on a $4M+ home and it truly is a “wow” factor. 4) Add some exterior building lighting with some modern sconces as well as some up-lighting from the landscaping. Hope this helps.
