I think the silver leopard will look perfect. The eclectic space with the velvet chair with the "plain" side tables and glam headboard will be a nice punch! Plain white, or plain black shades will be sort of "boring" and expected. A busy pattern shade will be a bit much with the headboard. The subtle silver pattern is just right. :) IMHO

Thought you might want to take a look at some rooms that have the 1960's vibe to them. Note the lamp shades...

You MUST take one of the lamps with you to find the right shade. Otherwise it's like buying a hat without a head. The harp will determine how a shade sits on the base and you can't see that without putting it on the harp. A black or opaque shade changes the diffusion of light considerably so consider that. Black shades look great but don't diffuse light well. Depends on the look and use you want. You can also change harps as well as finials and pulls to customize. A good lighting store with a large selection of shades harps and finials is your best source. Do you have a Lamps Plus in your area?

Thank you everyone for all of these wonderful ideas and options - love these suggestions and wouldn't have thought of them myself! My husband would like to keep it simple so while I love some of the more exciting options, I'll bring the lamps to a shade shop as suggested and probably do something like pagosapamie or Darzy suggested - slubby texture in white or that silvery clean look. While the headboard & lamps are mid-century modern the rest of the house is not really and I don't want to go Hollywood Glam (though I love it!). We have a built in piece on the opposite wall and we'll have a glass desk sit partially on it (half way) and extend out with a waterfall glass leg so my husband has a view when he works. There is no dresser in the room besides the two Ikea Malm dressers acting as bedside tables and an awesome Elfa walk-in closet that holds everything else. The chair belonged to my husband's grandmother who lived in Geneva, Switzerland. We may reupholster but not sure. Thoughts on that? Here's a photo of the built in - excuse the mess, still moving in. Glass desk being built as we speak (white desk will go).

Dclostboy - I love your idea of the shades and coordinating drapes. We're having white roller shades (black out and sheer) installed behind the built-in drywall valance - same throughout the condo for a clean look, though. We're on the ocean so we want to let that shine more than window coverings, etc.

Great headboard and good luck on finding the right lamps for the room. I feel the the white walls are too stark. Have you considered putting a light paint colour on the wall?

Ocean view is gorgeous...I don't have anything on my beach house windows either. Even with the view, though, you could use some artwork...something with circles or soft shapes to offset all the rectilinear surfaces.

Great headboard and lamps - keep the shades consistent with the feel of the headboard and lamps. I love the alexandragilson suggested red lamp on the right. It's beautiful and would make the room pop with color and glamour.

Don't get a patterned shade, you'll tire of them quickly. Do take a lamp to the store and try some on for size. It really is trial and error. If you read in bed you'll want to consider that and get shades that shed light on your reading material.

The right shade is the bane of my exsistance! I have been looking, shopping for three years to find the right ones......crazy! But the two black drum shades I just got are IT! I think.....

Hi everyone, the bedding is orange - (Anne de Solene Epices Orange). We took the lamps to a lamp place. They helped us find this white, fine open weave burlap. It gives us the flexibility to add a wilder duvet cover & art work if we'd like. Another contender was a solid silver which was beautiful. We'll consider silver if we get bored of the white. We're going to add artwork - just need to get it out of storage and possibly reframed. And we'll need to buy some, too! Still working on bringing in some warmth. Ignore the moving boxes and the silver bench - those will get moved out.

Love the shades - that is exactly what I was talking about. Also love your orange bedding. I would love to see a few turquoise accessories, some white coral mounted on a plexiglass base and a large mounted black fan coral in a shadow box on the wall. You can see them on www.Etsy.com. They are all different prices, but add a layer of "transitional" to a very mid century room. You said the rest of the condo was not quite as contemporary and adding accessories really does warm a room.

I love turquoise so will look for accessories in that shade and I like the ideas you suggest to add some more layering. Our place is actually quite contemporary - this room has more Mid-Century modern because of the lamps and headboard. But I wasn't ready to give those two items up and go to a strictly modern look. And there is a cool lucite lamp we're keeping in the living room. Thanks again!

Love your room! Nice veiw too! I like the white drums, but I think black with a silver or gold metalic lining would add more drama, I would also like to see a slab of lucite under the lamps to make them the same height as that gorgeous headboard. Being I am a window enhancer, I would love to see decorative drapery panels on the outer sides of window, framing that gorgeous veiw. Can't wait to see the artwork ,that is going over the desk! Perfect choice

The lamps and headboard are stunning. Any of the suggestions are worth a try BUT you have so many choices and can very easily change the look of the room simply by changing the colors and textures. Start with what you like, then change it around until you are satisfied. Such an inexpensive way to redecorate. Match up your bed throw to your drapes , then go either neutral or a shade or two different with the lampshades. I change out the color and textures of our rooms with the seasons, going lighter and brighter for the spring and summer months.
Have fun.

lampshades.. mmm why not get simple no frills tubular lampshade and glue feather boas to it.. I promise it will be stunning and unusual and won't cost a fortune

Try not to select a shade to tall that would exceed your headboard height. I think a white linen would be great!

Thanks again, everyone! I've been looking for coral to frame as Pagosapomi suggested.

I was thinking of taking a picture or two and blowing it up to put next to / sort of behind the lampshade on the right side above my bedside table. And a larger canvas or pastel we have to go over the left side and to run partially over the lucite bookshelf with the Buddha statue. Any thoughts on styling those areas? Once I get to storage I'll take a picture of the pastel we're considering for the left side.

That sounds like a bit too much (at least for my taste). I think the headboard should be the art. Maybe one thing way over to the left on that headboard wall, but nothing to the right or behind the lamps.

I like the idea of the headboard being the art. It is large and will overwhelm anything east on the wall. I think, I would try a piece of coordinating fabric on the back of the headboard. Which can be put on with self stick Velcro. You can even use a sheet that matches the bedding.

A Coolie shade would look so much better than a drum as it aligns with the geometrics of your headboard and would look like it naturally belongs.

Awesome lamps! I'd go with the shape alexandragilson suggested but I think black would be awesome. If you found black lined with metallic silver that would be even better. (you could paint the inside of a less expensive shade. Height wise, I'd go about about 1/3 the total height including the harp. By the way, you can always bring a few shades home and try them…Home Good, Target, T.J. Maxx, Lamps Plus, Marshalls (if you like to bargain shop)
