I could be wrong, but I don't think you're going to find many others who have had a similar experience. Does the glitter come off easily -- when you rub or sand it, for example?

Have you tried painting a small area in an unobtrusive place in the ceiling? Is it a flat or a textured ceiling?

It was a '60's thing. When was your house's ceiling done up?

Liberace? Gary Glitter? :) It is probably part of a spray on texture. If you try to paint it with a roller you may end up with more of a mess than you have now. You may want to look into spraying the ceiling.

Right, usually it was used on a textured ceiling. They had a bulb to put the glitter in then while the texture (or paint) was still wet squeeze the bulb and the glitter shot out of it onto the wet paint.

If you remove the texture you will both have a smooth ceiling (which is preferred) and no glitter!

Thank you all for taking the time to comment!! Yes our home was built in the 60's. The ceiling looks pretty smooth - I would not say it was textured. I think the glitter would look great in the right environment, just not our formal living room with cathedral ceiling (it would be a better fit in my 11 year old daughter's room :) @ Kevin Strader, yes - I have the same concern that if I try to roller it - I will have a bigger mess on my hands. However, if some of the glitter was showing, it might look better with a newly bright white ceiling containing glitter, than a dirty-dingy white ceiling with glitter. The ceiling has obviously not been painted since 1964.

Yes, well, glitter on a freshly painted ceiling is better than glitter on a dingy grey 50 year old ceiling!

My uncle bought a special "poofer" to apply clear glitter to the wet paint of freshly painted ceilings as part of his work as a contractor. Apparently he gets enough people asking for it that he needed the special tool to apply it properly. So this isn't just a "60s" thing. It does tend to make the room a lot brighter by reflecting the light around.

Just get a good primer first that will cover it.

I am looking for someone who can add glitter to my textured ceilings! I'm near Raleigh, NC, and no one I speak to has heard of it!! But I adored this effect years ago in my CA apartment.

I do remember seeing this in homes from the sixties here in Fla. guess it was the thing for awhile!

Use high quality paint and minimum two coats. That should hide it.

Lowe's sells a glitter crystal additive that can be put into paint, while not as pretty as mid century glitters, it looks nice on the ceiling.
