Why don't you try hydroponics ?
With a few cheap items you can build a system that fits on a small balcony to grow salads, tomatoes or plants.
See www.hydroponicsonline.com where they show plans to build an 11 bottles (2 liters each) system real cheap.

Hi ibmarkley! Two years ago I started container gardening and I enjoy it so much more than the bed gardening. Try it, you'll love it!

First you need to find out which way you face and how much sun that location gets. Then you can actually research the plants themselves. There's quite alot that you can grow in containers depending on how big a container you're willing to buy and the growing conditions of that location and in your area. I usually research the plant first and then look into what I need to do when container-growing...

Or perhaps more accurately, a plant that I like jumps into my cart and then I end up researching it. LOL
