before the dahlias

Can anyone think af an annual that I can put in my dahlia patch to give me something to look at before the dahlias are in and growing large? It would, of course, have to be something that flowers quite early and likes a fair bit of sun. Self-seeding would also be an asset. I have alot of annual seed to plant and wondering which will be a good filler, as it seems a shame to have that open space before the dahlias take it over.

have you thought of foxgloves they self seed or delphinums they are both beautiful I grow those along with dahlias and they are awsome!

Annual cosmos bloom early in our climate - not sure for B.C.?

Love In A Mist (Nigella) is a pretty blue spring bloomer.

What about poppies? Shirley poppies bloom in June in NY. I think peony poppies bloom about the same time. They like sun, and finish blooming before it gets too hot. I am going to use poppies, then rip them out when they're done and plant zinnias in their place. Dahlias should work too, especially if you start them in pots, so they're good size plants when you move them into the garden.
