Me too, living in UK NW, bought my 1st bonsai tree this morning for 35 quid, a nice japanese elm, abot 12-14 inches tall.
It needs a bit of TLC, as it looks like it has had a little bit of frost damage at the ends of its new shoots.
Will look good when all it`s leaves are out though.
Does anyone know if `Baby Bio`is ok to us on Bonsai`s, I think it should be as it is only a mild fertiliser?

Cheers

Dave.

Im new here also. I bought a Parsonii Juniper last night from HomeDepot and trimed the roots and transplanted.

A few concerns for me is that Im in zone 10 and from what I hear, most decidious plants dont do well down here.
I like how frenquintly this site is used.

http://www.zdarko.net/bonsai is my photo site for my plants.

Bill, junipers aren't deciduous, they're coniferous.

I know Junipers are conifers but I have seeds coming. I bought Trident Maple, Chinese Elm, Olive and 2 others. These are deciduous, at least the Maple, and would like to know how these trees hold out in Zone 10.

I dont know what Baby Bio is. Is this only found in the UK?

Most conventional fertilizers can be used for bonsai, Baby Bio just being a specific brand. Most fertlizers contain the same 3 elements, Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium, but just in varying proportions. Most of them are greatly diluted when applied when used for bonsai.

Here is a good article about fertilizers.

Here is a link that might be useful: fertilizers

The trees that don't do well in hot areas are 'hardy' ones that need a couple of months of cold dormancy in winter, nothing to do with whether they're decids. or not. I would have said the maples would be a problem, but I think others grow them down there, though I would check with local bonsai clubs about that.
