Question about making a planter

I have a large planter that is actually a cut-down water tank from my husband's job. The outside is fiberglass-wrapped so it looks like it's been wrapped in that strapping tape with strings in it.

Anyway, last summer I tried spray painting it with Plasikote but it came off. Now I'm thinking about trying to apply tiles for a mosaic.

What would be the best way to accomplish this? Liquid Nails followed by grout, then a sealer? Would I have to do something to the fiberglass to make the liquid nails hold the tiles on? I'm thinking of using the small 1" tiles you see at Home Depot etc.

Sorry, I don't know much about putting tiles on it - I think I would rather cover it in hypertufa and have myself a concrete trough!

This poses an interesting challenge. You have to remember that the fiberglass and the tiles are going to move differently when warmed up or cooled down. You generally want a similar substrate for the overlaying material so that movement is similar to prevent cracking of your grout.

I haven't heard of a flexible grout but there may be one out there. Maybe someone can help us with this. I'm interested too.

GE Silicone II holds on to just about everything and since it's actually caulk it does "flex" and allows for some expansion and contraction. It might work for attaching the tiles. Sorry but I can't help with the grout question, I don't grout anything.

an idea would be to use the silicon as mentioned above ( I also believe liquid nails is flexiable when set, but besit check) make sure to leave excese between the tiles to cover all the surface of the fibreglass, then grout as normal, this way there is a flexiable barrier between the fibreglass, and the tiles/grout, i think this should work..
