I'm wondering if you can use Bromine? It is recommended for spas as an alternative to chlorine. I believe it is milder than chlorine, but if my memory serves, dissipates faster due to the sun's magic rays. You may want to call a local pool company. They are extremely well versed in what chemicals to use in different applications and would definitely know which chemicals will and will not affect your bronze. They can also advise you on how to maintain the proper chemical levels such as ph. You can take a sample in and they will test it for free. A Google search couldn't hurt either.

Is there a bronze fountain anywhere in town? If so, call the Public Works department if it is a community one, or the building maintenance supervisor, and ask them what they use, maybe they can help.
