I have sat on one at a church camp, but didn't know it had a special name, and certainly had no idea who designed it.

Personally, I thought it was comfortable, but the one I was sitting on had been built for children so the seat was maybe 12 or 13 inches off the ground instead of the 15 inches in the plan. That's probably the key; making sure your feet can rest flat on the ground. If I remember, the backrest was just the right size for me to rest my arm up over too. At 4'11", it was a perfect fit for me.

It wouldn't be too hard to make a cushion for one if the issue is the straight, hard seat.

I didn't know what it was either until I checked that link. Yes, I have sat on one but thought it uncomfortable. The back leaned too far back. I also think twomonths was being helpful.

Well, we built one as a prototype. Took the Labor Pool a little over an hour--very fast to cut and assemble. It's lookin' real nice under my redbud tree in the shady area of the garden. Since this one is working out, I'll ask the L.P. to build two more for other parts of the garden (yes, it's big).

I was underwhelmed by the one I sat on also and by the tone in two of the posts in this thread. Gratuitous insults aren't called for.

Woah. Thanks for the post, twomonths, because even though I can't help the initial poster, at least I can now follow the conversation and will have a clue if someone mentions an Aldo Leopold Bench in the future. I don't see a problem with your post at all.

I'm so happy that I ran across this post - I bought 'A Sand County Almanac' over the weekend and spent a good part of the weekend on the back porch with an iced tea and this wonderful book. I'm taking a woodworking class this fall and the A.L. Bench is going on my wish list of projects. Thanks, leaveswave.

Leaveswave, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder. Not sure how you read into Twomonths post as being anything but helpful... you really should reconsider your slant. These forums are not for insults.

Emtnest, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. And it appears that you are more interested in merely stating it than having a meaningful discussion. We'll just have to agree to disagree, especially since you seem to have quite different definitions for certain terms than I do. But extra points to you for trying to understand other points of view and communicating in a non-attacking manner. Oh, wait, you didn't do that, did you?

This bench is very quick and easy to make. We found though that the depth of the seat is very important. We went according to the directions and made two of them in an afternoon, but decided to remove the seats and replace them with wider lumber. We now use them all the time around the fire pit.

There was not one hint of an insult or attack in twomonths' post, and anyone who thought so is just looking to cause trouble. I feel compelled to ask why there are so many people in this world that go out of their way to create unhappiness where none exists... I know too many people that are not satisfied unless everyone around them is as miserable as they are inside. Why is this, I wonder? Are some people that empty, that devoid of good spirit that kicking puppies and taking candy from babies has become something that makes them think they are happy? What a sad existence they must lead to need others' sorrow or ire to feed from...

I wasn't even going to post here, but I have to comment on how flabbergasted I was as I read through the above posts... how is helpfully sharing a website so everyone can see what is being talked about perceived as a personal insult? I read and re-read the posts, thinking I might have missed something... but I still don't see any insult or attack...

What I DO see is a very defensive individual, quick to jump with claws extended... this individual might not even realize they are being hurtful... they may have had to defend themselves from hurt of some kind their whole lives, and hurling pain is just an automated response. What ever happened to the Golden Rule? Does anyone even know what it is, anymore?

I genuinely feel sorry for those who cannot behave pleasantly in a place such as this, where the subject matter makes most of us very happy. There is so much despair and unpleasantness in the world today, that it should be nice to come here and share our thoughts and ideas on gardening and related things... MOST of the people here ARE very nice!

I suppose in every crate there's bound to be a few bad apples... all it takes is one with a rotten spot to spread that rot to the entire crate... or at least, try to...

Yup.......Every crate has some bad apples. Leavewave was asking for help and others were only attempting to help with their comments. Seemslike Leaveswave is quite ungracious and limited to nasty comments instead of being thankful for the help.
